Stam See VIEWPOINT on 3 Independence Day is usually a day for celebra- tion. This year millions of Americans feel long held liberties and the freedom of religion is un- der attack. In the last year or two we have seen our nation move from freedom to fear and liber- ty to government control. Many of these chang- es not only threaten our American way of life but the church in particular. We have seen many of our moral values disap- pear and a frightening decline in Christian com- mitment. Wrong is seldom called wrong when it comes to attacks on the church. Many things we thought were solid Christian values are now questioned and ignored. God's Word is under at- tack by political leaders, school teachers, the elite media and liberal pastors. In the mainline churches more than half the pas- tors say the Bible is in- accurate in all the prin- ciples it teaches. Liber- ation theology and social justice have replaced the New Testament's Gospel of personal salvation. The churches generate about $50 billion in donations each year. Some politicians oppose our presi- dent as he calls for religious liberty and a return "Sweet Name come down from Heav'n above, To win our heart's deep tender love; As Bethlehem and Calv'ry prove: My Jesus."How true this old hymn is! Bethle- hem and Calvary do indeed prove that the Lord Jesus Christ came from heaven to win us to him- self. St. Paul's declaration that "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners" (ITim.1:15) takes in both Bethlehem and Calvary. At Bethlehem Christ showed His love for man, not merely by coming to be with us, but by becoming one of us. Luke, "the beloved physician," wrote the fa- mous "Gospel According to St. Luke" to show how truly man the Lord Jesus Christ was. Apart from sin,our Lord experienced all the emotions, the sorrows, the joys, the pains, the pleasures that we do. The Son of God actually became the Son of Man that the sons of men might become the sons of God. But His life alone could not save us. His ho- liness would only expose our sin and condemn us. This is why the Apostle Paul declares that "Christ DIED for our sins" (ICor.15:3), and that "We Have Redemption Through His Blood, The For-Giveness Of Sins, According To The Riches Of His Grace"(Eph.1:7). Those who believe this and trust Christ as their personal Saviour rejoice in the truth of the above poem. Their hearts have been won to the Bless- ed One who came from heaven to Bethlehem and Calvary because HE loved them. Hey, how are you all doing with all the heat and humidity slapping us in the face every time we go outside? We could get very spoiled if we had 75 degrees and calm weather every day but it would get boring. I think I'll give a shout out to another retired work mate who like the rest was a good worker and good to be around. This week it is Si Ashley and his nickname as far as I can remember was Si-Bo or something similar to that. Si finished his career working as an electrical planner and he was as good to work for as he was to work with. I still get to work with Si once in awhile whenever we all help put up the Christmas displays in the park. Best wishes and blessings to Si and Mary and all their family. I was going to grumble about something this week but I think I will take a softer approach. There are a few things we were taught in driv- er's education that doesn't seem to be made as important in today's classes and that is right of way. I have seen numerous times people wait- ing to pull onto Main Street with traffic keeping them from turning. You are on the opposite side of Main but you want to turn in the same direc- tion as the other car and they have been waiting longer than you. They pull out before you or at Continued on page 2 Monday, July 13 8 AM - 3:30 PM Dr. David Purdom's office Gibson General Hospital, Suite 2206 For an appointment, call 812-385-9392.
