NEIGHBORHOOD CAL CALEN ENDAR DAR N SHOPPER & SHELBY SHOPP R OPPER & SH S SHELBY S PP NFO INFO Teen artist wants to donate funds from art sales to Neal Center by MICHAEL E. POWELL Community First Media For 16-year-old artist Allie C. MacArthur, being creative artistically and using that gift to help oth- ers is as natural as breathing. MacArthur, a rising junior at Crest High School, is the daughter of Noel and Lucinda MacArthur of Shelby, said she saw an article in the Shelby Shopper and Inc. about the Neal Senior Center not having enough resources. She immediately contacted the parent organization for the Shelby Shopper and Inc. and wondered if they might be interested in doing a story on her raising mon- ey for the Center, the same way she did for the Cleveland County Rescue Mission. Allie noted she raised $500 in that endeavor and she wanted to do the same, and more hopefully, for the Neal Center. In her email, MacArthur said she wants to sell her artworks and wishes the donations "to go to- wards meals for the senior citizens." The Leona Neal Senior Center, located at 100 T.R. Harris Dr., Shelby, was established, accord- ing to their web site, "in 1977" and serves all of Cleveland County. The Center's Mission state- ment (again, from their web site) is, "To maintain the Senior Center as a focal point, promoting ag- ing as a natural process, by opening doors that improve the quality of life of older adults in Cleve- land County." MacArthur's request is a simple one; she wants folks to know she creates art and is willing to sell it and donate the money to the Center in order to help the residents there. Said MacArthur, "100 percent of the profi t goes to them (or the charity she chooses to support). My mom and I were talking about doing some- thing during the pandemic. This was at the end of March and around the start of April. I wanted people a safe clean place to live and so we fo- cused (in her fi rst charity endeavor) on helping the Cleveland County Rescue Mission. It helps women and children." As for her art, Allie said she does it as a hobby, but she's quite good at it, and is very interested in creating something beautiful and meaningful. As for having a style, she said, "I do what I feel like doing, whether it's watercolor, acrylic, or draw- ing with pen and ink." She is just now beginning to get into oil painting, she said. Allie said the art form she likes drawing the most are mandala designs, which she colors. She also likes to draw fl owers and various patterns and similar designs. As for her mediums, she noted that what she works in depends on what mood she is in at the moment. "I might do a piece in watercolor, or one in pen and ink or acrylic. I also do some photography and have created a piece of sculpture or two," she said. MacArthur, whose mom is a nurse and dad is with the NC DOT, said college plans for her mat include religious studies, and perhaps a college where she can study anthropology. She has no siblings, she said, adding, with a smile, "Unless you count my three Beagle 'sisters', Pippa, Annie, and Sophie. I also have a hedgehog named John." Dad Noel said the three dogs are all rescue ani- mals. Allie's personal taste in art encompasses a wide range of styles, but she favors Impressionism, she said, noting she likes works by Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet, in particular. One of the pieces she created in acrylic is her version of Van Gogh's famous "Starry Night". As for raising the funds she wishes to from her art sales for the Neal Center, Allie said, "I'm sell- ing my art to be able to give to them (the Neal Center) but I will also take donations, and all the Shelby artist Allie MacArthur with one of her acrylic creations, her version of "Starry Night." Shelby's Allie MacArthur and her Dad Noel with some her art she is wanting to sell to raise money for The Neal Center. money will go to the Center." As for Allie's artistic future, she noted, "It's a creative outlet and one with which I challenge my- self and help people at the same time, so it's a win-win situation for me." To contact Allie about buying her art and helping out the Neal Center at the same time, or to make donations, please email her at alliecatmacarthur@out- look.com.
