PEGGY RUTH HAMMOND DAVIS Peggy Ruth Hammond Davis, 85, of Lawndale, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2020 at Hospice at Wendover- Shelby. Born in Cleveland County, NC on January 19, 1935, she was the daughter of the late J.C. Hammond and Ola Thomas Hammond. She was a homemaker and a member of Norman's Grove Baptist Church. In addition to her par- ents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Hammond. Survivors include her husband of 66 years, C.L. Davis; two sons, Charlie Davis of Belwood and Barry Davis and wife, Connie of Claremont; two daughters, LaDonna Houser and hus- band, Ken of Mooresboro and Janice Shafer and husband, Freddie of Kings Mountain; a brother, Roger Hammond of Lincolnton; a sister, Betty Howie and husband, J.G. of Polkville; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren Mrs. Davis lay in state on Wednesday, June 17, 2020 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Norman's Grove Baptist Church. The funeral service was held June 17, 2020 at Norman's Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Huss officiating. A private burial followed the service in the Cleveland Memorial Park. DONALD "DON" CONN Shelby: Donald "Don" Conn, 84, died Sunday, June 14, 2020, at his home. Born in Noxubee County, MS, he was the son of the late SD Conn and Maeola White and her husband Cleveland. Donald was a truck driver for more than 50 years, driving for Johnson Motor Lines, NASCAR and retired from PPG Trucking. He was a charter member of Crestview Baptist Church, and a member of the Shelby Lodge #744 and Piedmont Pistons Shrine Club. Donald was a loving man who loved his family, friends, church and Sunday school class. He was the oldest of 16 siblings. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, David Conn; and son-in-law, Scott Patterson. He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Durham Conn; daughter-in- law, Debra Conn, daughters, DeDe Wyatt and husband Bill, Kim Patterson, and Maria Wesson and husband Chad; son, Gene Conn; grandchildren, Matt Pearce and wife Jean, Donnie Wyatt and wife Sylvia, Brian Conn and wife Julie, Rem Dickey, Brittany Patterson Padgett and husband JJ, Scottie Patterson Webb, Jaida Wesson and fiancé Dylan Mangum, and Nate Wesson; 9 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The family received friends June 18, 2020, at Crestview Baptist Church. Funeral services followed at 1pm, in the church, with Revs. David Webb and Stan Webb officiating. He is predeceased by his par- ents Thomas (TC) & Ella Humphries. BRENDA KAY BEAMGUARD HUMPHRIES Brenda Kay Beamguard Humphries, age 75 died Sunday, June 14, 2020 at Atrium Healthcare Cleveland. Born in Gaston County on August 25, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Katherine Irma Waters Beamguard. Kay attended Poplar Springs Baptist Church. She worked as a Loan Officer and secre- tary Union Trust and BB&T in Shelby for many years before retiring. Kay enjoyed traveling, was an avid reader and being with family. Kay is survived by her husband of 56 years, Phil Humphries; a sister, Fritzi Campbell and husband Steve of Lincolnton; and many other loving family members Memorial service was held on Thursday, June 18, 2020 at 11:00am in the chapel JEWEL ESTELLE GREENE Shelby: Jewel Estelle Greene, 84, died Saturday, June 13, 2020, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Mary Hoffman. Jewel worked the majority of her career in the business office of the Lily Mill, and was a member of their retiree group. Jewel loved and appreciated her Zion Baptist Church fam- ily and her loyal friends. She especially appreciated Ann Williams and Louise Campbell that visited her nearly every day during her nursing home stay. Jewel was an avid reader of a variety of books and enjoyed visiting the library. In addi- tion to her mother, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Wona P. Holland, Elizabeth Blanton, Alice J. Daves, Billie D. Jenks, and Winnie Lankford. She is survived by her nephew, Dean M. Jenks and wife Jan; niece, Maxine Edmondson, both of Shelby; grand niec- es, Jana J. Bradley and hus- band Matt of Boiling Springs, Jessalyn J. Marcela and hus- band Rigney of Cornelius, and Holly K. Bowman and husband Dickey of Shelby; and great-grand niece, Kale Bowman of Shelby. Per her final wishes, a small celebration of life graveside service was held June 17, 2020, in Sunset Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Matt Storie officiating. FRANK CLINE THAYER Frank Cline Thayer, 85, of 206 Dixon Drive Blacksburg, SC, passed away peace- fully, Saturday, June 13th, in the company of family mem- bers, at his beloved home. A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Milton Yarnell and Thelma Gold Thayer and a widower of Carolyn Ligon Thayer. Having proudly served our country, he was a retired Lt. Colonel with the United States Army, serving 25+ years, with a very distin- guished career. He served in both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War earning MIKE PUTNAM Mike Putnam, age 46, of Old Church Street, Mooresboro, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2020 at Rutherford Regional Medical Center. Mike was born April 10, 1974 in Cleveland County to Dan Putnam of Shelby and Joyce Bailey Hawkins of Mooresboro. He was a graduate of Kings Mountain High School, class of 1992 and worked for BMW Manufacturing Plant in Spartanburg. He loved spending time with his family and was of the Baptist faith. Besides his parents, those left to cherish his memory include step-father, Chivous Hawkins of Mooresboro; companion, Danielle Beck of Mooresboro; three chil- dren, Logan, Macy and Jayden Putnam all of the home; sister, Sarah Watts (Shane Derreberry); step- sister, Carrie Ann Ramsey; nephews, Christopher Watts, Dylan Hegler, Cody Derreberry, Joshua Derreberry, J.R. Derreberry and niece, Jessica Watts Mmusi. The funeral service was held June 20, 2020 at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Shane Adkins officiating. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Debro and Alma Pearson Webb. Katherine retired from Hoechst Celanese after 28 years of service, and was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl B. Wood; and brothers, James "Turkey" Webb and Pete Webb. She is survived by her daughters, Debbie H. Smith and Donna Coleman, both of Boiling Springs; sis- ter, Jeanette Frances of Boiling Springs; brother, Jerry Webb and wife Judy of Fallston; grandchildren, For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two- edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. -Hebrews 4:12 several prestigious medals and commendations includ- ing the Purple Heart and 5 Bronze Stars with Valor from Vietnam. Mr. Thayer was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, Blacksburg, SC the American Legion Post 109 of Gaffney, SC, VFW Post 4941 of Blacksburg, SC, DAV Chapter 54 of Gaffney, SC, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Special Forces Association, Rotary Club, Georgia Bar Association as well as the Planning & Zoning Board of Blacksburg. Left to forever cherish his memory are sons, Frankie Thayer (Joy), Blacksburg, SC, Dean Cook (Allison), Gaffney,SC and Kenny Cook, Myrtle Beach, SC as well as his nephew, Charles (Becky) Addington, Gaffney, SC, 8 grandkids; Lucy Thayer and LeeAnne Thayer, Thayer Cook (Saide), Jessi Cook, Kendall Cook, Kaitie Cook, Sydney Cook, and Cash Cook and 2 great grandkids; Callie Cook-Nicolosi, and Harper Richardson. Frank was gen- uinely cared for during his last days in his home by Joy and Frankie and Shelnell Reid "his Coco". Also left to remember his remarkable life is the Collins Family, the Beam Family, the Allen Family, and the Stroupe Family.
