"For it to be fresher, you'd need to buy it at the farm or pick it yourself," says Market Manager Carol Maxwell. FFM operates at three different times at two locations. The Uptown Shelby market is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. - noon at the Shelby City Pavilion, 126 W. Marion St. The satellite market is open each Tuesday at the Cleveland County Public Health Center, 200 S. Post Rd., with new hours for this sea- son. "We have shifted to 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. to allow customers to shop over their lunch hour," says Maxwell. "T's Tiny Farm food truck will be at this location, so folks can place a lunch order, shop for local produce and pro- tein, and pick up their meal when they are finished." The satellite market will be open each Tuesday through the end of August. "All of the markets offer card services options for shoppers, so no worries if you find yourself at the market without cash," says Maxwell. "We swipe debit, cred- it, and SNAP/EBT benefit cards in exchange for tokens to spend with our vendors." As an extra incentive to SNAP benefit cus- tomers, FFM will match the first $5 that a SNAP customer spends with $5 in Market Moola to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables. "We are proud that our market features more than 70 approved vendors from a 50-mile radius of Cleveland County," says Maxwell. "We visit our farms to ensure that they grow or raise everything they sell." Maxwell says the FFM organiz- ers are especially thankful to the City of Shelby for realizing the importance of the market as a food resource for our community during the recent pandemic and for allowing us to open at the City Pavilion. "At this time, we are asking customers to follow our cur- rent COVID-19 Protocol," says Maxwell. "Please protect our farmers and other customers that fall into at-risk categories." FFM protocols include: staying home if you are sick, wearing your mask while you are under the Pavilion, washing or sanitiz- ing your hands often, maintain- ing social distancing while you shop, pointing to your selections and letting the vendor bag your items, and leaving pets at home. All entertainment and children's programming are postponed at this time. "We all hope we can be back to normal soon, but for now, we are just thankful for our farms to be able to sell," says Maxwell. For up-to-date information about the FFM, Maxwell urges customers to follow the FFM on social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter). Customers can also consult the FFM website at www.foothillsfarmersmarket.com for information, contact informa- tion, or to sign up for the weekly email. Weekly emails include information about what products are currently in season. "We also offer a text reminder service when the market is open. Simply text the phrase '@ae47hbk' to the mobile number 81010 to sign up," says Maxwell. N.C.
