SPORTS MAY 2013 GMC INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove • Page 3B AROUND THE COMMUNITY East boys win for fifth straight time in event Brookfield Central finishes distant second By Evan Frank WEST ALLIS – There was a big target on their back after winning two straight state titles. Now the target is even bigger. The Brookfield East High School boys track and field team won its fifth straight Greater Metro Conference indoor title last month, scoring 188 points to win by 92.5 over Brookfield Central. East coach Mike Steiner welcomes the challenge. "It's what you want, it's what you strive for," Steiner said. "You want to be in a position that we're in. It's what makes it fun. The kids like the challenge of competing and defending." East won nine of 17 events, with junior Will Sutton winning three events. Sutton won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 7 1/4 inches. "I didn't really expect too much out of myself," Sutton said. "I was able to come up big when it really counted." After winning the 55meter dash in 6.72 seconds, Sutton was sent to the triple jump pit. He scratched on his first attempt but rebounded with a winning jump of 41-6 1/4. "I didn't really panic (after scratching)," Sutton said. "It's happened to me before. I've just got to keep calm, go back to my mark, just do my fundamentals and make sure that I have a good drive base so I don't scratch again." Sutton's performance was no surprise to Steiner. "We knew he had some special talents," Steiner said. "He's very passionate about track and field. I think the events we put him in fit him well." He broke a 13-year-old GMC indoor record in the 1,600 by winning in 4:20.94, six seconds faster than the old mark. "I hope everyone realizes if they're running with him or seeing him run, then they're seeing something special," Brookfield Central coach Mark Pulkownik said.
