Families get into reduced stream of things Trash down, recycling up in challenge By Darryl J. Enriquez Special to The Freeman WAUKESHA – Families of separate Brookfield and Waukesha schools combined to reduce their trash by 20 percent and increase their recycling by 13 percent, according to county figures released recently . The families' efforts were the result of a monthlong Reduce Your Waste Stream Challenge competition sponsored by the Waukesha County recycling program. Participating families from Brookfield Elementary and the STEM Academy of Waukesha each earned their school a $1,000 Waukesha County Green Schools grant award, provided by Waukesha County School faculty also participated in the . challenge. Waukesha families reduced their trash 22 percent over the monthlong project and increased recycling 3 percent, according to a news release. Brookfield families reduced their trash 18 percent and increased recycling 33 percent, the release said. In all, 135 families participated, 87 from the STEM Academy and 48 from Brookfield Elementary . "I'm proud of the families who participated in the most recent Reduce Your Waste Stream Challenge," said County Executive Dan Vrakas. "The efforts these families made reflect the commitment residents in Waukesha County have for recycling and the environment, and also show how typical families can take easy steps to make an impact." Using the statistics from the challenge, the recycling program estimates if the participating families maintained their pace of reducing and recycling for an entire year, they would send 30,000 fewer pounds of trash to landfills and recycle an additional 13,000 pounds of material, the release said. "The Challenge has shown that no matter which area of the county participants are from, they are all able to reduce waste and increase recycling," said Rebecca Mattano, solid waste supervisor for Waukesha County "The results are very encourag. ing and confirm that any household could achieve similar success with just a little effort simply by practicing – reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost." The Waukesha County recycling staff mentored the families to succeed with the project, the release said. Families received weekly emails with tips and encouragement. They could ask questions through the challenge blog. Among the effective methods families incorporated into their households were composting food scraps, purchasing only items with recyclable packaging and considering alternatives for items normally thrown in the trash.
