As I drove, I prayed and spoke with the Lord about what to say to encourage this veteran sol- dier of the cross. On hospital visits I usual- ly shared Romans 8:18 and II Corinthians 4:16 -18, verses that are tailor-made to min- ister to the heart of any believer lying on a bed of affliction. The problem that particu- lar day was, I knew that Bernie knew those verses. As a seasoned saint, he knew those verses before I was born. So how was I go- ing to comfort him? What could I possibly share with him from God's Word that he didn't already know? If you've ever found yourself in a similar situation, the Apostle Paul gives us some direction in this area in his ministry to the Thessalonians. Paul introduced those dear saints to the doctrine of the pre-trib- ulation Rapture during his initial visit to Thessalonica (II Thes. 2:5). A fter that, he reviewed this precious truth in detail in his first epistle to them (I Thes. 4:13-5:11). So by the time Paul wrote his second letter to these saints, you'd think they would have been resting confidently in the "comfort" of this cherished truth (4:18; 5:11). Baptist Baptist We have basic constitutional rights be- ing denied to our high school and college young people. This small minority of athe- ists and those in the ACLU would silence the religious freedom our youth deserve and are entitled to. Groups like Freedom from Religion are attacking prayer at commencement and expressions of their faith. Religion as protected in the Consti- tution is being denied to our youth. Our school boards and even parents have failed to protest when our young people are denied the right to pray at school or talk about God at graduation ceremonies. This attack against the faith of young people is well funded. President Trump is working hard to restore the liberties and free- dom in our schools and government. To turn America into a Socialist and humanistic state God must be re- moved from the fab- ric of our society. Al- most daily we hear of colleges losing control of Christian or- ganizations on campuses. The last admin- istration tried to remove religious liberty Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas My friend Jeff Holmes would probably say"howdy howdy how's it going." As a matter of fact it was his nickname at work just as most of us had nicknames we car- ried and answered to more than our real names. Don't ask me why I'm starting this column like this but sometimes it is nice to mention your friends and let them say greetings for you. With the stay-at-home order still in effect we have done our best to do as it says and limit our time away from our safety zone, but we had to go to Evansville to buy a med- icine. It has to be mixed by an apothecar.y So we decided a trip to a couple of our fa- vorite grocery stores while we were there. It was a good outing, but we hadn't been out much at all since Governor Holcomb's or- der. I noticed most people we encountered were going about their business with masks on and waiting for each other to pass so the social distancing could be maintained. State Rd 57 Oakland City By now, I'm sure you prob- ably have learned that gover- nor Holcomb has initiated a multi-stage plan to open res- taurants, malls, salons, etc. But the most exciting an- nouncement is the date of May 8, when religious ser- vices can commence. Of course, special provisions must be in place as churches transition to having services again. Thus, at Crossroads, things will appear different than before as we follow the guidelines and practice so- cial distancing. Perhaps the most obvious change will be the new arrangement of seating. Chairs will be ad- jacent for family units, but moved to allow distancing between families. Additionally, there will be no children's message nor Sunday school (at least not initially). As much as I love to embrace, there will not be a welcome of walking around, shaking hands, and embracing each other. It will be highly recommended to use sanitizer, and remind- ers will be posted to wash hands frequently. My under- standing is that masks are not required, but everyone is welcome to wear them. The guidelines I reviewed strongly suggested no food, coffee in greeting or fellow- ship areas, so no refresh- ments will be offered (at least at this time when we begin to worship again). In sum, things will be differ- ent, but safety must be the utmost consideration. Note that as we begin to have services again, we will not immediately begin all of our outreach (for example the community baby show- er). Crossroads is commit- ted to our community and will engage in outreach to coincide with the gover- FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH 8th and Poplar Street Petersburg 812-354-6582 Welcome to our church family All services have been can- celled until further notice. Mission Statement New Beginnings: What would Jesus do? We will strive to be more like Jesus in all that we do. "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flash, but quickened by the Spirit" (I Peter 3:18). "Let your line shine be- fore men, that they may glo- rify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). Our Lord regarded His followers as a select com- pany who belonged to a dif- ferent world from the rest of humanity. Many of the religious people of His day were worldly and nonspiri- tual, publicly parading their religion to impress others while privately dominated by pride, ambition, greed and falsehood. Jesus told His disciples they could not make their light shine by sinking to the world's low level. It was only by aiding in Christ and in Christ and liv- ing under the ruling power of His Holy Spirit that they could rise above the world. Only in that way could they be salt and light to a decay- ing and darkened world. Our influence on society depends on our likeness to Jesus Christ.
