Poplar Street, Petersburg PC Boys basketball awards The six Charger basketball award winners for 2020 include Jersey Mills, Ethan Scott, Colin Craig, Sean Hansel- man, Hunter DeHaven and Peyton Howald. Junior varsity awards went to Alex Clark and Aden Brown, and the freshman award winners were Braden Howald and Jeremiah Johnson. Kiwanis Mental Attitude Jersey Mills Coach Hunter Elliott said, "Jersey is such a great kid and he came to prac- tice everyday ready to work and fill his role. He was a very good leader and teammate the whole year and a plea- sure to coach." MVP Ethan Scott Coach said, "Ethan had a solid year all around and was at the top or near the top of almost all statistical categories for us this year. He was just such a com- petitor and played extremely hard on both ends. We asked a lot out of Ethan this year and he really stepped up and grew tremendously. A lot of nights he was tasked with guarding the other team's best player, and being one of our leading scorers and play makers." Academic Colin Craig Coach commented, "Colin is a tre- mendous kid on and off the floor. He is very well-rounded and involved in a lot of extra curricular activities, while also excelling in the classroom. Colin did a great job for us on floor, as well as be- ing one of our lone big men and always leaving his all out on the floor." Most Improved Sean Hanselman Coach stated, "Sean really had a great year and got so much valuable ex- perience. By the end of the year, we re- ally were relying on Sean to do a lot for us. He is very difficult to guard, and can really get in the paint and make plays. He grew so much and I think he could be one of the best guards in the confer- ence next year." Charger Pride Hunter DeHaven Coach Hunter Elliott said, "Hunt- er came back out and played this year and I could not be more grateful to have gotten the opportunity to coach him. He never complained and worked his tail off the whole season and during the year. Unfortunately, he got dealt a tough hand with injuries, but really handled that adversity amazingly well. Hunter is a great kid and really exem- plified the attitude and effort we are looking for in our program." Uncommon Peyton Howald Coach said, "Peyton had the very ra- re experience of playing on the fresh- man, JV and Varsity levels this year. Peyton started the year splitting time between freshman and JV, and fin- ished the year starting for the Varsi- ty. Being 'Uncommon' is something we really preach, and Peyton is someone who really does those common things in an uncommon way. He attacks every practice and game like it is his last, he competes at a very high level, commu- nicates with his teammates, and was a leader even at the Varsity level as a freshman. Peyton has tremendous up- side and he can be as good as he wants to be." JUNIOR VARSITY MVP Alex Clark Coach commented, "Alex had a good year and really started to come into his own. Offensively he is very talented and can really shoot the ball. By the end of the year, he was really doing a great job on the defensive end and decision mak- ing as well. Alex has a lot of ability and can really be a game changer for us in the coming years." Most Improved Aden Brown Coach Elliott said, "Aden grew by leaps and bounds this year. He plays the game with great pace and has an amaz- ing understanding of how the game should be played. Aden is a great team- mate and has really grown as a basket- ball player. I see Aden being a very valu- able piece for us moving forward." FRESHMAN MVP Braden Howald Coach said, "Braden had a great year at the freshman level. He did exactly what we asked out of him and really improved as the year progressed. The freshman finished out the year play- ing very well and this was in large part to his play. He is a great leader and a player who can really play both sides of the ball. He is a lockdown defend- er and does a nice job of getting in the paint and making plays." Most Improved Jeremiah Johnson Coach commented: "Jeremiah, or "JJ" as we call him, really improved throughout the year. This was the first time in several years he had gotten to play organized basketball and I think he really learned a lot and grew as a player. JJ is a gym rat and loves bas- ketball. I know that he will continue to grow as a player and have a great ca- reer as a Charger." By James Capozella Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Regarding the lost season, Charger head golf coach Jarod Gideon said, "I have been coaching various sports at Pike Central for 20 years and golf for 17 years and losing this season for the seniors in every sport is the most heartbreaking thing I have seen in all my years of coaching. As a coach, your heart truly goes out to all these kids that won't get a chance to bring their athletic careers to a close. "It just kind of leaves you without clo- sure and just doesn't seem real. I know all of these seniors will move on to bigger and better things and this will only be a bump in the road for them, but for now, I know it's a very difficult way to end their athletic ca- reers at PC. I am proud of everything that they have done for our school and our golf program. They have always made me proud and I know they were looking forward to putting an exclamation point on their senior seasons. I hope they all know how much they are loved and appreciated." Coach Gideon was speaking of seniors Jaylon Mills, Colin Craig, Quinton Sorgius, Matthew Barrett, Ethan Scott and Andrew Claridge. Mills, Craig, Sorgius and Barrett have played since their freshman year, and Scott and Claridge were coming out for the team for the first time, according to Gideon. JAYLON MILLS Jaylon Mills misses seeing his friends and the Pike Central staff. His plans are to attend Vincennes University for precision machining. Mills is the son of Jason Mills and Lindsay Row. COLIN CRAIG Colin Craig will miss saying his final goodbyes to his friends, including the se- nior class. He was president of the swing choir and Key Club, a member of student section and the prom. He plans to attend Western Kentucky University to study broadcasting and communications with a minor in business. Colin is the son of Jim and Cassi Craig. QUINTON SORGIUS Pike Central senior golfer Quinton Sorgi- us hopes "We can get together during the summer before we go our separate was off to college." Sorgius, son of BJ and Heather Sorgius, of Petersburg, plans to attend Ball State University, majoring in construction management, with a minor in business ad- ministration. He commented, "I was looking forward to my senior year, spending time with my friends during the golf season and improv- ing my game. Due to the successful past seasons and high numbers of participation, I am thankful for Coach Gideon because he allowed everyone to be a part of the team, even though not all could play every match." Quinton played on both the Charger golf and tennis teams, was a member of the Fel- lowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and Key Club. MATTHEW BARRETT Matthew is the son of Jackie and Ann Bar- rett and will miss seeing all his friends, plus the musical season. He plans to attend cu- linary school. ETHAN SCOTT Ethan will miss seeing all his friends ev- ery day and also being active in sports. This season he was going to participate in his first year of golf and also baseball, which he played up until sixth grade.
