The new program, called the Shelby1Fund, is designed to offer loans of up to $10,000 to small busi- nesses located within the city limits of Shelby, North Carolina. "We know small busi- nesses in our city are facing unprecedented challenges during this time, and we're proud to announce that City Council has approved the creation of the Shelby1Fund Emergency Loan Program to help small businesses in our community. The mis- sion of the Shelby1Fund is to provide short term "bridge funding" to small businesses in Shelby and assist them fi- nancially by getting operat- ing funds to them quickly, as they adapt to the hard- ships brought about by the COVID-19 crisis", stated Rick Howell, Shelby City Manager. "I'm proud of the steps the City of Shelby is taking to help small businesses that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The creation of the Shelby1Fund Loan Program will help pro- vide operating funds to small businesses in our city, and limit losses during this dif- ficult time", added Shelby Mayor, Stan Anthony. The City of Shelby has partnered with Mountain Bi- zWorks to oversee the loan application and fund distri- bution process. Mountain BizWorks is a non-profit, US Treasury-certified commu- nity development financial institution based in Ashe- ville, which has 30 years of small business lending and training experience. The City is providing the funding for this loan program, and has set the criteria for the loans, but will not have access to any financial information from any small business that applies for a loan, and will also have no influence over the approval of any loans. Mountain BizWorks is solely responsible for administering and approving of all loans.
