BETTY JANE PIPER Betty Piper passed away peacefully on Friday, April 3, 2020 at the Wendover Hospice House in Shelby, North Carolina at the age of 86. Betty was the daughter of Alva B. Turner and Genevieve (Jane) Krauss Turner. Born in Hollywood, CA on April 23, 1933, she graduated from Hollywood High School. She lived most of her life in California but called Shelby her home for the past 12 years. She is lovingly remem- bered by her three children, Tim Piper (Susan) of Oro Valley, AZ; Terri Isaacs of Shelby, NC; and Tom Piper (Lori) of Pleasanton, CA; as well as six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and her sister Lorrie Garpner (Erik) of Huntington Beach, CA She served as an admin- istrative assistant in several Department of Energy facili- ties, retiring from the Lawrence Livermore Lab in California and Rocky Flats National Laboratory in Colorado. Betty's defining characteris- tics were her love for the Lord, her compassion for others, and her ability to act on her convictions. While her family grieves over the loss of their mother, grandmother, and sis- ter, they celebrate because they know that she is now in the presence of her God and Lord Jesus. The family wants to give spe- cial recognition and thanks to the staff at Wendover Hospice House, who lovingly cared for her for four months. We would also like to acknowledge the staff of Summit Place Assisted Living in Kings Mountain, NC for their outstanding care of our mother for the preceding eleven months. The family will hold a memo- rial service at a later date when the current social gather- ing restrictions allow it. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that contributions be made to Hospice Cleveland County, and daughters-in-law, Dr. John William Claytor, Jr., and wife Lisa Davis Claytor of Shelby, Robert Holland Claytor and wife Kathy Spake Claytor of Greensboro, four grandchildren, who affec- tionately called her "Bessie"; Dr. Jennifer Davis Claytor of San Francisco, CA and John William Claytor, III of Shelby, Austin Holland Claytor and wife Ashley Weddle Claytor of Charlotte, John Andrew Claytor of Charlotte and her niece Jonan Holland Shelton and husband Rick Shelton and their children, Lisa Mauney and Tripp Shelton, as well as a nephew Rostan Holland and his son Chad Holland. The family will hold a private Graveside Service at Sunset Cemetery with Rev. Tony Tench officiating. Memorials may be made to: First Baptist Church, 120 North Lafayette Street, Shelby, NC 28150 or Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150 HILLARD KENNETH HESTER Hillard Kenneth Hester, age 87 of Cherryville, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 5, 2020 at his residence sur- rounded by his family and hold- ing to his wife's hand. He was born April 1, 1933 in Gaston County to the late John Clifton and Annie Whitworth Hester. He was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and retired from Eaton Corporation. Hillard enjoyed working on lawnmowers and doing wood- working. He always had a smile on his face and was truly kind to others. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Christy Hester; sister, Shirley Hester Gales; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Stonewall and Athalee Scates; brothers-in- law, Steve Scates, Richard Pruitt, and Jasper Gales; and sisters-in-law, Jerri Ramsey and Brenda Morrison. Survivors include his devot- ed wife of 66 years, Margie Scates Hester; sister, Brenda Hester Pruitt; brother, R. Steve Hester and wife, Sue; broth- er-in-law, Butch Scates and wife, Pat; sister-in-law, Dottie Towery and husband, Ed; numerous nieces and neph- ews; his McDonald's friends; his church family; and several close family friends. Due to the Executive Order From The Governor of NC, a private graveside service will be held at Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Dale Hendricks officiating. JAMES CHARLES VAN DYKE James Charles Van Dyke, 85, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on April 05, 2020 at Testa Family Hospice House in Kings Mountain, NC. James was born in Cleveland County, NC, son of the late James Peter and Lether Mae Smith Van Dyke and was pre- ceded in death by his broth- ers, John and R.L. Van Dyke and three sisters, Sarah Ann Warlick, Mary Jane Allison and Barbara Lovelace. He was a longtime member of Patterson Grove Baptist Church. James enjoyed owning and working at stores and retired from the retail business and trucking industry. Always busy, James was well known in the com- munity and loved talking to anyone who would listen. He loved going to auctions and coached Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball for many years. James was an avid sports fan and loved watching Braves Baseball. He was a wonderful provider, loving hus- band, father and grandfather. James will be missed dearly by his many friends, the com- munity and his loving family. Survivors: wife of 65 years: Margie Van Dyke, of the home; sons: Darrell Van Dyke (Kim), N. Born in Cleveland County, on January 5, 1960, she was a daughter of the late Carl Gantt and Ocie Gantt. She was employed with Universal Manufacturing until her health began to decline. She was a mem- ber of the Plainsview Baptist Church where she was a member of the Helping Hands and WMU. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her brother, William Gantt and sisters, Jean Toney and Annette Cabaniss. She is survived by her loving husband of thirty years, Andrew "Andy" Dean Costner; brothers, Roger Gantt of Lincolnton and Joey Gantt of Shelby; and sisters, Donna Quinn of Gaffney, Wilma Toney of Boiling Springs, and Ruby Gaily of Georgia. Mrs. Costner will lie in state on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home, Fallston. ELIZABETH "LIB" HOLLAND CLAYTOR Elizabeth "Lib" Holland Claytor, 95, died peacefully Sunday, April 5, 2020 at the Hospice Wendover in Shelby. Born May 28, 1924, she was a native of Shelby and the daughter of the late Roland Griffin Holland and Nancy Wilkins Holland. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John William Claytor, Sr., in 1998, two brothers Griffin and Lawrence as well as one sister Dorothy. Lib Claytor attended Elon College where she met her husband, Bill. They returned to Shelby where she began her teaching career as an 8th grade English teacher and later taught the 8th grade Gifted and Talented program at the "old" Shelby Junior High School on Marion Street. Lib educated many residents of Cleveland County for over 43 years. She also earned a Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling at UNC-Charlotte and spent the last 14 years of her career as a counselor at Shelby Junior High School. Lib was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Red Hat Society and several bridge clubs. She was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church, Shelby Presbyterian Church, and First Baptist Church of Shelby. She trav- eled on cruises to the Panama Canal, Nova Scotia and Alaska. She was fortunate to have made a trip to New York City to the top of the World Trade Center in mid-August 2001, just one month before the 9/11 tragedy. Lib had a quick wit and a sharp sense of humor. She had a sweet tooth and loved anything chocolate. When there was a task in front of her, it needed to be done NOW! She was very indepen- dent and lived in the same house for 62 years until join- ing the Elmcroft community in October 2019. Lib is survived by her sons SHIRLEY LEWIS ALLISON Shirley Lewis Allison, 80 of Lawndale, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2020 at Testa Hospice House, Kings Mountain. She was the daughter of the late Lee Franklin Lewis and Florence Gantt Lewis. She worked hand in hand with her husband at Gilmer Allison Trucking, Inc. Mrs. Allison was a member of Norman's Grove Baptist Church for sixty years where she was a faith- ful Sunday school teacher, choir member and dedicat- ed worker. Her greatest joy was her family and she also enjoyed music, writing poetry, cooking for others, and read- ing, especially the Bible. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gilmer D. Allison and three brothers, Woody, Boyd and Everett Lewis and a sister, Ruth Beam. Survivors include a son, John David Allison and wife, Ginger of Lawndale; a daughter, Ann Miller and hus- band, Ken of Lawndale; four grandchildren, Caleb Miller and wife, Breanne, Cole Miller and girlfriend, Miranda, Chance Allison and Marlee Griffith; two brothers, Thomas Lewis and wife, Shirlene and Loyd Lewis and wife, Sara all of Fallston and one sister, Lorene Houser of Vale. A private graveside service will be held at Norman's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Keith Huss officiating.
