Watch for virus scams Hoosiers are facing chal- lenging times to keep their families safe and avoid the spread of COVID-19, and unfortunately scammers are adding additional risk by taking advantage of the current health crisis. New- ly-surfaced reports show scammers creating text messages, emails, websites and social media posts to pose as government enti- ties and organizations to obtain financial informa- tion from individuals for personal gain. The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) team continues to find ways to assist Hoosiers, which in- cludes helping individuals identify scams to avoid fall- ing victim. Here are a few key signs of these scams: Emphasizes the terms "Stimulus Check" or "Stim- ulus Payment." The Inter- nal Revenue Service (IRS) uses the official term "eco- nomic impact payment." Asks the individual to sign over their stimulus check. Asks by phone, email, text or social media for ver- ification of personal and/ or banking information to receive or speed up their stimulus check. Mails the individual a fake check and requests the individual to call a num- ber or verify information online to cash it. DOR recommends Hoo- siers remain vigilant and work hard to identify these scam attempts. Never en- gage with potential scam- mers online or on the phone. Individuals who receive emails, text messages or social media attempts to gather information that appears to be from DOR, the IRS or an organization closely linked to either gov- ernment agency, such as the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EF TPS), should forward it to phish- ing@irs.gov. Learn more about report- ing suspected scams by go- ing to the Report Phishing and Online Scams page on the IRS website. Individuals can find offi- cial IRS information about the COVID-19 pandemic and economic impact pay- ments on the IRS Coronavi- rus Tax Relief web page. For information on COVID-19 related changes to DOR operations and ongoing taxpayer relief, visit DOR's Coronavirus webpage at dor.in.gov/7870.htm. Social distancing in the outdoors The warm, beautiful weather brought folks to the outdoors at Prides Creek Tuesday afternoon. Disc golfers and kayakers alike practiced social distancing while soaking up the sun. James Capozella photos United Way starts relief fund for COVID-19 The United Way of Pike County has started a relief fund for COVID-19. "The United Way of Pike County has created a fun- draiser page in response to the Covid-19 pandem- ic. During this tough time, people may be laid off, out of work, unable to pay their utilities, rent/mortgage, unable to afford basic ne- cessities such as food, ba- by products, or clothing. We do not know the full ef- fect from this pandemic to our community, but we are prepared to respond quick- ly once it leaves and we try to rebuild," said Unit- ed Way executive director Krista Robinette. "We have started a dona- tion on Facebook so peo- ple can go to the UW Face- book page (to donate). I al- so want to highlight that if people do not have internet and/or would rather send a check, they may do so to United Way." "All of these funds go right back into Pike Coun- ty and helps those organi- zations here that help the county during this time of need. If you have any ques- tions, please let me know," said Robinette. "Checks can be sent to PO Box 321, Petersburg, IN 47567 and noted to go towards Covid-19 Relief Fund. Put in the memo that the check is for the COV- ID-19 Relief Fund." Community Foundations donate $5,000 for PPE The Pike and Daviess County Community Foun- dations are joining to give Daviess Community Hos- pital Foundation a grant. The two county communi- ty foundations are giving a $5,000 Rapid Response Grant to the hospital foun- dation. The grant will be used to cover the cost of additional Personal Protec- tive Equipment, which has been purchased in prepara- tion for a potential surge in patients. The Community Foun- dation Alliance, Inc., the legal entity through which each of our affiliate Com- munity Foundations oper- ate, is making this grant in furtherance of a charitable purpose as defined by In- ternal Revenue Code Sec- tion 501(c)(3) "We are very grateful to the Daviess County and Pike County Communi- ty Foundations for these funds," said Angie Stein- er, director of Business Development at DCH. "This grant will help off- set the costs already in- curred for the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks, gloves, sanitiz- ing products, gowns, ther- mometers, soap, syringes, air scrubbers, shields, pro- tective eyewear and venti- lators."
