I would dig with shov- els, spades, sticks, garden hoses spray- ing water full blast, or just my hands. I remember the smell of the soil. Most of you will know what I mean. Soil has a distinct smell, which comes from a com- pound called geosmin. Geos- min is produced by a soil or- ganism formerly called ac- tinomycetes, now called ac- tinobacteria. Healthy soil will have this unmistakable smell. Now, when I take a handful of soil and take in a deep breath, it is like a time machine carrying me back to my childhood. I be- lieve we may all have similar memories. Studies have shown the smell of geosmin, which is what also gives a summer rain its characteristic smell, makes us happy. When I learned that, I was not surprised be- cause I have ac- tually experi- enced it. Maybe you have too. In my current position as Pike County's new USDA-NRCS District Conser- vationist, I intend to share my passion and experienc- es conserving soil and oth- er natural resources. You will learn quickly of my be- lief that the health of the soil depends greatly on how we manage it. Also, I be- lieve there is a direct link between human health and soil health. Soil has provided us with so much—penicillin to name one gift. Wise people often opine about how little we know about soil as compared to the rest of the earth. I agree that the soil is a complex en- vironment that holds many mysteries and I am hopeful that it will continue to pro- vide for us better as we grow to understand it and regen- erate it. You never know— the next anti-viral medica- tion may be sitting under our feet. For many of us, in a very short time, our happy-go- lucky attitudes have been displaced by fear and uncer- tainty about what is to come. However, amid the current crisis, I think it is safe to say, we have all become a little more appreciative of the lit- tle things in life—a walk in the sunshine, the wind blow- ing through the trees, and yes, the smell of soil. This weekend, I hope you all can tap into your inner child, gr- ab a shovel, and dig up some happiness. Stay safe everyone! I look forward to serving you! Follow me on Twitter: @ healthysoilguy. Farm Bureau to host agriculture education workshops for teachers Indiana Farm Bureau, the state's largest gener- al farm organization, will host three educator work- shops this June for Agricul- ture in the Classroom vol- unteers and any interested teachers. Ag in the Class- room is a program led by INFB which helps bring ag- riculture education into In- diana's schools. The workshops are de- signed to prepare educators and in-class volunteers to in- tegrate available resourc- es and hands-on activities about agriculture and the environment into an exist- ing classroom curriculum. Attending a workshop gives educators an opportunity to learn from local experts in agriculture and ask ques- tions. The workshops al- so are designed to prepare INFB members, who volun- teer in schools through the Ag in the Classroom pro- gram, to learn new activi- ties to be included in class- room visits. "The workshops are designed for preschool through high school edu- cators who wish to expand their curriculum to include topics related to agriculture – the world's food and fiber system," said Lindi Kocher, INFB's ag education coor- dinator. "The three work- shops are spread across the state, to make it more acces- sible for educators and vol- unteers." The workshop dates and locations are: • June 1, 2020 – Beck's Hybrids, Atlanta, Indiana. • June 2, 2020 – Ancilla College, Plymouth, Indiana. • June 4, 2020 – Ivy Tech, Columbus, Indiana. Each of this year's sites will offer a different, unique experience for attendees. The cost per person, per workshop is $ 30, and lunch will be provided. Each workshop also will include free teaching materials and hands-on experiences. Pro- fessional Growth Points (six points at each site) also will be available for educators. Registration is now open for all three workshops. Visit www.infarmbureau. org/events to learn more and register to attend. Due to current uncertainties, re- funds will be provided in the event the workshops are canceled.
