Justin Harper What doe s it take to perform? Last week, over 100 of Cleveland County's finest young singers represented their schools during the 2013 Elementary Honors Chorus Concert in Kings Mountain High School's Barnes Auditorium. To audition, 4th and 5th graders sang "America (My Country Tis' of Thee)" and auditions were exchanged between music teachers. This event, sponsored every year by Cleveland County Schools, gives students an opportunity to sing in a large ensemble, on a beautiful stage for the community. On Friday, during the regular school day, those students we bussed in from all over the county rehearsed for over six hours. Many of the local elementary music teachers conducted songs with a variety of sounds. The Burns High School Orchestra accompanied a song called, J. Justin Harper "Cripple Creek" with a full string band. African percussion was heard in a song of thanksgiving called, "Kuimba Assante." Even some sounds reflecting Offenbach's "Can-Can" melody, in the song "Chumbara," a folk song from Quebec. I hope the children we worked with last week have learned their lesson about time. Hours upon hours of work were put forth, both at home and during after school rehearsals as students were expected to sing the words and melody from memory. After spending a whole day at the venue, I'm sure the students were hot and exhausted at what seemed like an endless practice. The next day, students shuffled in black and white outfits, excited to make a joyful noise. Little did they know that the hours they spent rehearsing were about to pay off into less than 30 minutes of glory. For some students, there was a great sense of accomplishment to be part of something special; to get a taste of music in its greatest setting: Live Performance. 1414 Metcalf Rd.
