I fall somewhere in-between. I used to spend more time learning about new GARY MILLER gadgets but now I sort of just maintain until I'm forced to adapt or be left behind. One of the things that I'm trying to adapt to is my digital camera. I know, I know, don't laugh. I've actually had the camera for a couple of years but all I've been doing is taking pictures the simplest way I could. I thought all of the buttons were there so they could sell it for more. (I feel the same way about my cell phone. Why can't they just give me big numbers, lots of volume, and plenty of light?) I digress. I've always wanted to take pictures while I'm hunting or fishing but I never knew how to set up the timer feature. So, this year, I was determined (forced) to learn. I was tired of looking at all my pictures and always having the check-in station in the background. It sort of lost the effect of the hunt. This turkey season I've become a picture taking monster. I carry my bipod and my camera and have taken some really neat shots of me holding a turkey while in the woods. I love it. Now while I've really enjoyed the more realistic pictures, they still don't tell the story of each hunt. Each photo still has only three basic features; me, a turkey, and the woodsy background. The story is up to me to remember and relish, and share. If I were to show you one of these pictures you would simply admire the bird but be clueless to the effort that was involved in getting that gobbler from the limb to the lens. You might have assumed that it was an easy and effortless hunt. And you may be wrong or right. When you and I look at each other we often do the same thing. We take a mental picture and quickly add our own story, whether that story is accurate or not. We may assume that a person is rude or kind, arrogant or humble, aloof or approachable. However, most of the time, we just don't know. Life is so much better when we give others the benefit of the doubt. It seems that we all default to seeing the bad and the negative. It's the first button we learn to use on our mental camera. Maybe it's time that we all realized that there are other features that may give us a better look. And maybe it's time that we learned to use them. gary@outdoortruths.org ~ www.outdoortruths.org BOATS 1988 BAYLINER FISH & SKI 125 HP Outboard, new trolling motor, $1800. TIPS FOR TURKEY Many turkey hunters come home without a gobbler because of silly little mistakes like waiting until the bird was in full view before raising their gun. When the bird is approaching, get your gun up and poised long before you can see the gobble and never sit where a tree or brush in front of you is so close that it obstructs the swing of your gun. Before making a call trying to locate a bird, find a place nearby where you can plop down quickly. Many gobblers survive because they were close when the call was made and the hunter couldn't get into a good setup position soon enough. Getting impatient and deciding to move to a different spot has probably spooked more gobblers that were slowly coming in than anything. Staying longer is better than leaving too soon, so learn to be patient. There was a very low turnout, 3 or 4 boats and even a lower catch. For the first time, maybe ever-as John Black and I were discussing, NOBODY caught a keeper 14 inch fish. The old saying is someone always finds them, but not on this day. For whatever reason, several 12 to 13.75 inch fish were caught but no 14 inch and above. So as Ronnie Humphries said to John Black, "I don't think I have ever fished where I got a refund." Everyone got their money back and will try again on Lake Wylie. Moss Sixteen boats came out last Thursday for the weekly Thursday night bass tournament. Mark Swink fished solo and showed out with 16.33 and took the win. Chris Hoopaugh and Tom Gavin had 13.47 and were second with WGB getting third with 13.08. Scott Kiser and Tom Mayhew had 13.04 and claimed fourth and settling in fifth was Glenn Eaves and Kenny Lefeat with 11.35. They also had a 6.24 largemouth which was big bass of the night. These events start at 6pm and weigh-in at 9:30 pm. Carolina Bass Challenge David F. Canupp and David L. Canupp picked up the win on the Carolina Bass Challenge event on Lake Wateree this past weekend. The pair had 25.91 pounds. Judy Jones and Eric Grigg had 24.59 and were second, and anchored their catch with a 7.89 largemouth, which was big bass of the day. Bryan Helms and Mike Ware had 21.45 and took third with Joe and Joe Marks getting fourth with 20.89. Fifth place with 20.01 was Ronnie Mueller and Wayne Frierson.
