Poplar Street, Petersburg NEWS BRIEFS Refuge Friends offer an evening with the Woodcocks Feb. 29 and March 7 Saturday evening, February 29 and March 7, the Ref- uge Friends will offer a unique birding experience for the whole family at Boyd's Trail parking lot on Pato- ka River National Wildlife Refuge at 7 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Central for a brief presentation on the woodcock and a walk over to Maxey Marsh Trail in hoping the woodcocks are in the mood to put on a show. Boy Scouts collecting for Somebody's Place Petersburg Boys Scouts will be going around Peters- burg hanging grocery sacks on doors. It is the second year for them to do the food gather activity. The Scouts are putting out the grocery sacks this Saturday, February 29. They ask people to fill the sacks with non-perishable food items and then put them back on their door steps the following Saturday. The Boy Scouts will return on Saturday, March 7 to collect the bags and take them to Somebody's Place. 'Understanding your property taxes' seminar March 11 A seminar on "Understanding your Pike County Property Taxes" will be presented by the Pike Coun- ty Farm Bureau, Inc. in cooperation with the local Soil and Water District, the Economic Development Corpo- ration, and the Purdue Extension Office. Dr. DeBoer, a Purdue professor of Economics, will be the speaker for the evening. The event is free to any Pike County resident and will take place on March 11 at the Otwell Community Center. Doors will open at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Reservations are needed and can be made by calling 812-354-6838 before February 28. It is scheduled for 7 p.m. on March 13, 14 and 15 in the Vance Hays Auditorium at Pike Central High School. Extra! Extra! 'Newsies' opens March 13 Pike Central High School will per- form Newsies as the Spring Musical this year. They delivered the papers, until they made the headlines. Newsies, the smash-hit, crowd-pleasing musi- cal from Disney, is set for the week- end of March 13-15. A two-time Tony Award®-winning show, Newsies has audiences and critics alike calling it "a musical worth singing about! " (The New York Times). "Filled with one heart-pounding number after anoth- er, it's a high-energy explosion of song and dance you won't want to miss," said director Melissa Traylor. It is based on true events, Newsies tells the captivating story of a band of underdogs who become unlikely he- roes when they stand up to the most powerful men in New York. It's a rous- ing tale about fighting for what's right, and staying true to who you are. Newsies was brought to the stage by an award-winning creative team. It fea- tures a score by Alan Menken (Beau- ty and the Beast) and Jack Feldman (The Lion King II: Simba's Pride) and a book by Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles).
