What will you give up? During Lent, some Christians give up a luxury or vice as a form of self-de- nial or to practice self-con- trol. Ultimately, such a sac- rifice should benefit one's spiritual walk with Jesus, who gave up everything. A Missouri teenager de- cided to give up talking for Lent. Decklan Con- way, 13, communicated through dry-erase boards, going through three mark- ers in less than a week. Al- though he lost a few friends because he wouldn't talk, Decklan wrote, "I'm doing it for a greater purpose." He added, "God gave up his only Son for us...What are you willing to give up? " A worthy corollary to that question is "What will you take on? " What can you do for God's king- dom during this season of reflection and re-commit- ment? Office hours: 9 a.m.- noon, Monday-Friday. Amy Melhiser, Secre- tary OTWELL WESLEYAN CHURCH 2277 N. Free meals and free child care with RSVP to Deb Cooper at 812-483-8369. Prayer chair A man's daughter had asked the local minister to come and pray with her fa- ther, whom was ill. When the minister arrived, the man began to talk with the minister about how he never knew how to pray. The min- ister explained that prayer is just a simple matter of hav- ing a conversation with Je- sus. The minister explained, place an empty chair beside your bed, and in faith, see Jesus on the chair. Then, just speak to Him in the same way you're doing with me right now. The minis- ter prayed with the gentle- men, anointed him with oil and returned to the church. Two nights later, the daugh- ter called to tell the minister that her daddy had died that afternoon. Wesleyan Wesleyan gymnast and does extreme- ly well at almost all of her meets. These kids have tal- ent and a will to give it their best. I've heard people talking about our football and bas- ketball programs and how we aren't as competitive as we used to be. I ask you to look at our other sports and there are lots of great kids participating in sports other than basketball and football. There are lots of opportuni- ties for our kids now. We had Bible study at Golden Living Center Friday afternoon and it is growing more each time. The resi- dents listen carefully and as they are invited to put in their thoughts. Residents have became open with their thoughts concerning what- ever scripture we are using at the time. I think we had eight or nine residents last Friday afternoon. It was a pleasure to study with them. We finally went out Thurs- day afternoon to Washing- ton because we needed sev- eral items. We braved the germs to get out for awhile. Saturday we went to a Mex- ican restaurant for supper. It was good and they were sure busy. Again I had to point at the picture to order my en- trée because I can't pro- nounce many of the words on their menus. I'm not by myself because I watched several others do- ing the same thing around our table. Sunday morning our Sunday school lesson was about Lazarus and how Je- sus didn't come to Mary and Martha immediately so the power of God could be seen and that people would not look at Him, but see that the Father had sent Him and was working through Him. There were two impor- tant lessons from this pas- sage. Never do things with- out giving God the glory and number two you must have faith in knowing God will an- swer your prayers. If we were to see a mira- cle today would we recog- nize the power of God, or would we explain it away. We need to trust and know God is there and He answers prayer. Our morning scripture covered much of our Sun- day school theme and we talked about worldly peo- ple never seeing Christians growing by all the things they go through. The Bi- ble tells us we will be faced with many problems while we are in this body. Each one is a teaching device in the hands of God as He helps us through each of them. The world only sees our struggles. They aren't around when God brings victories over our troubles. Do you try to teach oth- ers. Then don't allow your- self to be caught up in the problems you teach against. It can plainly be said, "live what you say." There are truly folks who would love to have Christ in their lives, but it is what I call the "steering wheel" ef- fect. We all hate to give up control and we don't trust someone else doing the leading our lives. God does lead through the Holy Spir- it in your heart, if you will let have the wheel and you trust Him. On the flip side of people watching your life so they can see your trials. They find ways to say they are just as well off, because they think you have fallen and it makes them feel more justi- fied. Well that is about all I have this week so get out there and let God steer you to people to bless. PAWS WEEK PAWS WEEK Pet of the GEORGE "An animal's eyes have the power to speak a great language"— Martin Buber. This week, PAWS is featuring a mam- moth of a feline named George, who is a hand- some fellow and is not bashful about let- ting everyone know. He likes to lay around the office at PAWS and look beautiful. He is long-haired with silky black fur, with a thick overlay of red/brown fur on his back and bel- ly. His coloring is very unusual and he looks as if he had his hair do- ne at an upscale beau- ty salon. He is friendly and his long black whis- kers add to his distinct appearance. You must see him to appreciate his glamour.
