We received one postcard and one card this week at Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598. Postcard # 668 has pic- tured a green headed goose on the lake with a sightsee- ing boat next to a large rock formation; black and white cows grazing in a field with an unusual architectural type stadium; then a foot- ball open stadium; the state capital building of Madison; a robin, the state bird; the wood violet, the state flower; and the state flag of Wiscon- sin 1848. The back reads: "Hello, Sweets. We are hav- ing a great time snowmobil- ing in Northern Wisconsin and the U.P. of Michigan. The snow is nice with lots of it. The temps are a little warmer than usual, which makes it nice. Lots of good food to eat. We are with five other guys from the Hol- land, Ind. area. Take Care, Max and Rex Carlisle, Sten- dal, Ind." Thank you, Max and Rex, for postcard # 668 of Wiscon- sin and we hope your snowmo- biling with the guys was amaz- ing. I guess the northern region of the Unit- ed States has had more snow than Indiana has had. Our card has a blond- haired dog. Facility dog Id- ina may be small, but she is mighty. She specializes in caring for foster children and kids who are having sei- zures. Inside the card says, "Happy Valentine's Day, Sweets! Janie Tormohlen." Happy Valentine's Day to you, Janie, and hope your day was enjoyable. Winslow Patoka River last week wasn't over its banks and with the little rain we had, it's probably not over its banks again. I did see the White River at Peters- burg and it's over its banks and flooding loads of fields and closing roads. My daffo- dils are beginning to grow, they are about 2-3 inches high. Cold temps from the 50s to the 40s were last Val- entine's weekend until Tues- day, where the temps began to drop into the 30s. Then with the north wind that al- so came into the area on Fri- day, the teen temps started. These cold temps are harsh at times but my guess is that the coldness won't kill the pesky varmints that will be in our areas this summer. Our cold temps weren't cold enough. Yes, I'm complain- ing we haven't had a winter, but I'm like you all also and I do like these spring temps a lot. Valentine's Day was cold but after Norm got off work, he bought me a box of choc- olates in a big heart, a pink rose with a little white bear on the stem, and a cup that says "Love" and some hard candy. I got him a chocolate bar and shared my choco- lates. We also had pizza for supper. Oh, and we told each other "I love you. Happy Val- entine's Day," and sealed it with a kiss. Laura's Valentine's Day was okay until her car decid- ed not to start and she had to leave it in Bicknell and get a ride home. Saturday, we all made a road trip to Bicknell to see if we could find out what was wrong. So, our first try was to buy a new battery since hers was five years old. That took us into anoth- er road trip to Vincennes and back to install the new one. The battery wasn't the problem, but she needed a new battery anyway. So, now we have to get the car towed back to Winslow and who do we know that had a truck or even a trailer and was willing to travel that far. But, as we left town, we saw a towing service and a repair service. So, the calls began and the car was fixed, but not until Thursday. So more calls were made and with coworkers and family. All was almost okay. She had to wait a little longer to pick up her car because the part sent was not the right one and also when she got the car home, it doesn't want to idle. But it does run and she is thankful for that. Last Thursday, as we were out to pay our bills, we stopped in Winslow Town Hall and I picked up the "Newsletter - What's Hap- pening in Winslow" for Feb- ruary 2020. I like reading what our town news has to give and this newsletter has different ways we all should stand up and be counted during the 2020 Census. The Park and Recreation Board is planning their five-year Master Plan and they just had their month- ly meeting Thursday. They still need your input as to what you would like to see in your "dream park." Anoth- er item for all Winslow citi- zens is the suggestion box for comments you may have and it is located inside the Town Hall. Your voice mat- ters. The House of Mercy will have their annual Eas- ter egg hunt on March 28, with a rain date of April 4. Also, remember these dates: March 14 is Pi Day, May 25 is the Memorial Day Parade and July 11 is Clog the Pa- toka. The lights are about to dim for this week, but keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and enjoy life. Help out a friend in need. As always, smile, wave and say "Hi" to everyone you see this week. Ash Wednesday is the start of Lent.
