EVENTS Winslow seniors meet on Monday and Tuesday at the Community Center. Petersburg seniors meet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in the courthouse basement. We received no postcards this week at Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598. The Patoka River in Winslow, I believe, has risen or overflowed be- cause of all the rain that came in the area last Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10 and 11. On Friday, I was on my way with Laura to see how my mother, Mildred, was feeling after her car accident. She has bruises on her chest and all around her stomach from the seatbelt and airbags. It will take several weeks until she is back to no pain and her driver, Tammy, is sore also from the airbags and seat- belts. The car is a total loss, as all of the front of the car is pushed back to the windshield. It was a head-on col- lision and the person who hit them was at fault. Laura left Monday to go to work but I stayed to help Mom the rest of the week. When Laura and I left Indiana in- to Illinois, it rained on and off all the way over there and on Sunday, there was snow flurries for a short time. The temps were comfortable in the 50s all week and the rivers were over- flowing into the fields and some side roads were closed. Have you seen the blue jays and cardinals in your yards? I thought it was too early for them, but with the spring temps, I guess that's why I saw them. We stopped at the Gray- ville rest stop and I was so thrilled to see more than 10 squirrels playing or sitting in the trees. Norm and I have talked every day by text, and he has been busy also with work and then at home clean- ing up a fallen tree limb that had to be cut up with a chainsaw. Nothing more to say, so the lights are dimming for the week. Please keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and enjoy your area. Stop for school buses. Always, smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week. Social Security Matters By Rusty Gloor When should I claim my Widow's benefit? Dear Rusty: My husband passed away at the age of 52, and I was 53. I am currently 59. I've read about and been encouraged to file for widow's benefits from Social Security when I turn 60. My question is: does doing that impact when I should file for my regular Social Security benefits? In reading on many websites regarding my question, this never is addressed on what is best. Signed: Widowed Sur- vivor. Dear Survivor: You have my sym- pathy for the loss of your husband at such a young age. I'll try to clarify your options for you. Provided you have not remarried you can claim your survivor benefit at age 60, but if you do it will be re- duced by 28.5 percent from what it would be at your full retirement age (FR A) of 67. As long as you are explic- it when claiming your survivor benefit that you are not also applying for your own Social Security benefit, there will be no negative impact to your eventu- al Social Security retirement benefit when you claim that. But, determin- ing which benefit to take, and when, requires some thought. Your goal should be to get the high- est benefit possible for the rest of your life. To help you decide how and when to file, you should first see what your survivor benefit will be at your full retirement age (100 percent of what your husband was entitled to at his death). If that amount is more than you are entitled to on your own at age 70 then you should consider waiting until age 67 (your FR A) to claim your widow's benefit, so you can get that higher survivor benefit for the rest of your life. Conversely, if your own age 70 benefit will be more than your wid- ow's benefit at your FR A, then claim- ing your widow's benefit first and al- lowing your own benefit to grow un- til age 70 when it reaches maximum would be the more prudent choice. You can get estimates of both your survivor benefit and your age 70 re- tirement benefit by contacting Social Security. But if claiming the survivor benefit at age 60 is what you decide, or if you were to instead claim your So- cial Security retirement benefits ear- ly (e.g., age 62) there's more for you to consider. If you are collecting any Social Se- curity benefits before you reach your full retirement age (FR A) and you are still working, you will be subject to So- cial Security's "earnings limit" which restricts the amount you can earn be- fore they take back some of your ben- efits (the earnings limit changes an- nually; for 2020 it is $18,240). Up un- til the year you reach your FR A, they will take back benefits equal to one half of any earnings you have over the limit. During the year you reach your FR A the limit increases by about 2.5 times and the penalty is less, and once you reach your FR A there is no longer a limit on your earnings. So, if you claim your survivor benefit at age 60 and are working, exceeding the earnings limit will result in you per- manently losing some of your survivor benefits. If, instead, you claim your SS retirement benefit early (e.g., at age 62) you'll still be subject to the earn- ings limit until you reach age 67, but at your FR A they will give you time cred- it for any months you didn't get your retirement benefits and increase your benefit amount accordingly. The important point to remember is that you have a choice of which bene- fit to take, and evaluating your options as described above should lead you to the right answer–whether you should claim your reduced survivor benefit at age 60, or to delay until it reaches maximum at age 67.
