Beach Manager Natalie Bohnert said the boy had been out to the diving platform and was swimming back toward the beach when he went un- der. She said a woman, who only gave her first name to authorities, was next to the boy and grabbed him and started yelling for help. Bohnert ran in and helped get the boy out of the wa- ter onto the beach. She said he was breathing and had a pulse, but didn't respond. He was taken to the hospi- tal and recovered. • "Handsome Mick" Rowe was sentenced to 16 years in prison after plead- ing guilty to criminal devi- ate conduct, a class B felony. • County council mem- bers got sobering news. They were told the assessed value of the county would be reduced by 20 percent. Au- ditor Judy Gumbel said IPL's assessed value for next year would be reduced by $ 93 million, which would cause the county's assessed val- ue to drop $ 87 million from $713 million to $ 687 million. • Steve Nelson was named town marshal of Winslow. Nelson has served as deputy marshal for sev- eral years under Steve Eng- lish, who retired. • A Petersburg teen was arrested on a charge of theft and criminal conversion, stemming from a vehicle stolen from Huntingburg and found in Petersburg. • American RV opened a location in Petersburg at the corner of Nichols Ave. and Highway 57. • Pike County Commis- sioners voted 3-0 to approve an additional appropriation of $ 857,000 from the Coun- ty Economic Development Income Tax to build a wa- ter line to the River Birch Farms. It is a $20 million poultry genetics facility that is predicted to create 22 new jobs. • Petersburg opened bids from two firms to tear down the dilapidated buildings at 608 and 606 Main St. and leave the front facade. The bids were taken under ad- visement. •Petersburg Hardware was named the Best New Store Over 20,000 Square Feet at the national Hard- ware Conference. Owners Dennis and Sherry Bishop, and Eric and Robin Smith accepted the award at the ceremony in Marco Island, Fla. • Donnie Wiseman, 55, of Otwell, was in intensive care following a crash. Wise- man's van crashed into a house owned by Stanley and Connie Reed. Wiseman told investigating State Trooper Ryan Johnson he didn't re- member the crash. He ran off CR 850 and went about 50 feet through a bean field before hitting the house. • Fire destroyed the house trailer of George and Barbara Milford in Ot- well. A neighbor called in the fire at about 5:20 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21. Milford said Barbara wasn't home and he had walked a couple of blocks away to the Circle A conve- nience store.. June 19, 2019—Flames ravage the residence of Melinda Sharp in Ayrshire early Friday morning. Sharp, 63, died in the fast-moving fire. Her daughter and son-in-law David and Amy Taylor escaped af- ter they woke at about 12:30 a.m. They were unable to find Sharp in the fire before they had to get out of the house. July 17, 2019—Justin Kennel and Bo Webster, of Jasper, wait in line to unload their giant pink flamingo float. They were with a group of 12 people from Jasper. In all, 1,119 people participated in Clog the Patoka 2019, which is the third year for the wildly popular seven-mile float down the Patoka River. August 28, 2019—Pike Central running back Wyatt Frasure breaks free for a big gain at Brown County on Friday, Aug. 23.
