See additional obituaries on page C-7 Library receives $2,000 grant to promote 2020 Census Pike County Public Li- brary was named one of 59 libraries nationwide to receive a $2,000 Library Census Equity Fund grant from the American Li- brary Association (AL A), which awarded the grants to bolster library services to hard-to-count communities and help achieve a complete count in the 2020 Census. "We are so grateful to have these funds to support efforts in our county to en- sure our school aged kids, seniors, and all residents get counted in the Census 2020," said Library Director Stephanie Rawlins. The library is working in conjunction with Mayor Klipsch, Otwell Water, and the Towns of Spurgeon and Winslow to promote events throughout the county to in- form residents of why the Census 2020 is important and what resources will be available to support them. Efforts will focus on inter- net access, telephone sup- port, outreach to schools and community informa- tional gatherings. "The efforts of the Pike County Public Library," said AL A President Wanda Brown, "will shine a light on all the library workers across the country who are shouldering efforts to reach and inform their communities—especial- ly vulnerable and hard-to- count populations—about the importance of a full and inclusive count." The results of the 2020 Census will affect commu- nities across the country. More than $1.5 trillion in federal funds are allocated each year to state and local governments based on Cen- sus data. When residents are missed in the Census, their communities miss out on needed funding for services such as libraries, schools, healthcare, and transportation. The U.S. Constitution re- quires a census of all resi- dents every ten years. In the 2020 Census, residents will have the choice to respond online, by phone, or by mail. The U.S. Census Bureau will send mailings to house- holds prior to Census Day, which is April 1, 2020. To help achieve a com- plete count in the 2020 Cen- sus, America's libraries are informing their communi- ties and providing access to the online response option. Any day is a good day for cornhole Vaughn Woods and Doyle Willis were outside playing cornhole on Christmas afternoon at a family gathering in Petersburg. Florida-like temperatures in Pike County made getting outside to play with new toys and games pleasant. Temperatures were in the mid-60s last week for Christmas.
