The Mighty Oaks recently ap- plied to rejoin the NAIA and the Riv- er States Conference as a reinstated member. OCU was a member of the NAIA from the 1940s to 1990 and a member of the River States Confer- ence from 1968 to 1975. "We are exploring all of our op- tions that will benefit the athletic de- partment and the university," OCU Assistant Athletic Director T-Ray Fletcher said. "We have made appli- cation to the NAIA and River States conference and will have review vis- its in February. No decision is final and we will do what is best for the en- tire department." OCU awaits visits from the NAIA and River States Conference as part of the application process. Wood Memorial standout picked for Indiana Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary Team By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame announced its 2020 Silver Anniversary Team this past week, and former Wood Memorial star Haley (Harris) Broad- way was recognized as a member of the 18 -woman squad. Best known for a being a 1995 Indi- ana All-Star, Broadway was also an As- sociated Press (AP) second team All- State, second team Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA) All- State, and 1993 and 1994 AP high hon- orable mention All-State. She set the Gibson County and Wood Memorial school record of 1,573 career points, along with 924 rebounds and 297 blocks. She also set the school single-game record of 47 points and 25 rebounds. Broadway averaged 28 points and 11 rebounds per game as a senior, 24 points and seven rebounds as a junior, and 20.8 points and six rebounds as a sophomore. She was a three-time first team All-Pocket Athletic Conference selection, a two-time conference MVP and was Gibson County Athlete of the Year three times. She was also all-state in track and all-conference in volley- ball and tennis. Broadway averaged 12 points and eight rebounds per game as a fresh- man at University of Louisville and 10.5 points per game as a sophomore before two torn ACLs ended her col- lege career. She has worked in sales with Haw- thorn Pharmaceuticals and Purdue Pharma, and is now the director of sales and marketing for Chef Supply. By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central wrestling team recently competed in the Evans- ville Harrison 10 -way on Friday, Dec. 20 and Saturday, Dec. 21. The Chargers finished the event with an overall record of 4-5, which was a big improvement from when they went 1-8 at the same competi- tion last year. "Harrison was a very positive weekend for us and I believe we are starting to wrestle to our po- tential," Pike Central coach Ryan McCain said. "We came out with a better record than I anticipat- ed and it was a huge improvement from last year." Pike Central defeated South Spencer, beat Vincennes Lincoln for the second time this season and picked up two nice wins against Evansville Memorial and Evans- ville Harrison. "Those were two huge feathers in our cap," McCain said. "We just wrestled a lot better overall." The Chargers' five losses might not have looked all that competi- tive, but the final scores can be de- ceiving, with the team losing mul- tiple one-point matches, overtime matches and even having a couple of wrestlers get pinned while lead- ing the match. Pike Central lost three matches by one point or in overtime against Evansville North. "If we can maintain our wins and overturn those losses when we see them at Forest Park, we can take seven of our 13 head-to-head matches, which would be huge," McCain said. "Overall, I feel we're headed in the right direction. I set a goal for the team, currently we are nine and 12. We have 12 du- els left in the year, so right now, we are making a big push to win eight or more of those matches to come out this year with a winning record, which would be a huge im- provement from last year." Jon Cannon had a great week- end and finished with a 7-2 over- all record at the event. Dalton Wil- liams, Isaiah Greer, Griffin Boyd and Brandon Goeppner all went 6 -3. "Looking at our schedule ahead of us, it is absolutely an attainable goal for us to finish with a winning record," McCain said. "It comes down to how much these guys want it, and I feel they want it very bad- ly right now." Pike Central is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 4 at the Salem Su- per Six.
