Call Tony (704) 524-8505 The fi rst day of the annual American Legion World Se- ries (ALWS) is traditionally Senior Citizens Day and all attendees 55 and older can watch all four games of the day at no charge. For the second consecutive year, the local ALWS planning commit- tee has added a food and toi- letries collection for the Leona Neal Senior Center, which as- sists senior citizens in need of food. The pantry is supported solely by donations and sup- plies sometimes run low. The Senior Center, operat- ed by the Cleveland County Council on Aging, is located at 100 T.R. Harris Drive in Shelby. Center offerings for adults 55 and older include exercise classes, a computer lab, legal aid and screening for blood pressure and blood sugar. Also, seniors can re- ceive assistance from the food pantry once a month. Meals served in the Center are a separate service from the food pantry and diners pay for those meals. The goal of the Center is to improve the quality of life of the County's older adults. Center hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Thursday and 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Friday. The Center is closed on week- ends. The phone number for the Center is 704-482-3488. The 2019 ALWS opens Thursday, Aug. 15, at Shelby High School's Keeter Stadi- um; the six-day tournament runs through Tuesday, Aug. 20. The fi rst game on Aug. 15 is at 10:00 AM and the gates and Ticket Offi ce will open at 8:00 AM. Senior citizens are admitted free but still need to request a ticket at the Ticket Offi ce. The drop-off point for non-perishable food items and toiletries will be desig- nated containers outside the front gate. The Senior Center will be responsible for secur- ing the items at the end of the day. "Many of our most loyal ALWS fans are senior citi- zens and we want to support them and the Center as much as we can," says Eddie Hol- brook, chairman of the local ALWS planning committee. Dave, the owner, donated 20% of the sales from that day, he rounded up and gave a check for $400 for the Alzheimer's Association for the Stress Free Home Care walk team. The walk is Sept. 7th, 2019 for Gaston/Lincoln/Cleveland.
