She was the daughter of the late George Branch and Mary Ann Branch. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawton Woody London and several brothers and sisters. Mrs. London is survived by her son, Shan London and wife, Angela of Kings Mountain; two grand- sons; and one sister, Nellie Everhardt of Mooresville. He is survived by his wife, June Baldwin Sorrells; his three daughters, Michelle (Russ) Hamilton, Joanna (Tommy) Runyon and Lisa (Tim) Trexler all of Shelby; and six grandchildren; his brother, Chester (Katherine) Sorrells of Waynesville; and sisters, Nancy (Jim) Gardner of Spartanburg, Lois Dellinger MARY BROWN ELDER Mrs. Mary Brown Elder of Shelby, NC, passed away on July 26, 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim Henry Brown and Minnie Louise Davenport Brown; her husband, Robert Lee Elder; her son, Curtis Elder; her brothers, Ronnie Brown, Gene Brown, Garnett Brown, James Brown, David Brown and Thomas Brown and a sister, Margie Brown. Mrs. Elder is survived by two daughters, Faye Elder Guyton (Tony) of Kingstown, NC and Cheryl Elder McDowell of Shelby; one sis- ter, Dwynell Davis (Charles) of Atlanta, GA; four grand- children; six great-grand- children; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Elder of Shelby; and sister-in-law, Sarah Brown of Monroe GA. Funeral services were held at Canaan Memorial Baptist Church. Burial took place at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. Enloe Mortuary is serving the family. TERRY PUTNAM BYARS Terry Putnam Byars, 60, of Shelby, NC, passed away on July 27, 2019. She was born to the late Charles C Putnam and Ruth Goins Putnam and was preceded in death by two brothers Johnny and Ricky Putnam and a grandson. Mrs. Byars is survived by her husband, Pernell Byars; sons, Bradley D. Merck and wife, Constance B. of Gastonia, NC and Charles D. Merck Jr. and wife, Suzanne of Fallston NC; step daughters, Ashley Allen and Megan Byars; brothers, Kenneth Putnam and wife, Margaret of Shelby, NC and Randy Putnam of Shelby, NC; sister, Debbie Blanton and husband, Ricky of Cliffside NC; five grandchil- dren and a great-grandchild. John Burl Mauney, Jr., 88 of North Drive, Cherryville passed away on August 2, 2019. He was a son of the late John Burl Mauney, Sr. and Laura May Hawkins Mauney. Mr. Mauney served our country in the US Army. She was born to the late Joseph William Wise and Maude Huntsinger Wise. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Blanton; son, Morris Blanton; two grandchildren; and three brothers and five sisters. Mrs. Blanton is survived by her two sons, Joe Wayne Blanton and wife, Debra of Ellenboro and Ricky Blanton and wife, Debbie of Cliffside; and four grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. OBITUARIES I N RE M E M I N RE M E M B RA N C E OB OB OB OB I O SHELBY, NC – August 2, 2019 -- The military-focused events related to the 2019 American Legion World Se- ries (ALWS) begin even be- fore the games Aug. 15-20. The 208th Army Band will perform as the opening act for country artist Martina Mc- Bride during the N.C. Ameri- can Legion 7th Inning Stretch Festival Saturday, Aug. 10. The band is a U.S. Army Re- serve Band whose primary mission is to promote the es- prit de corps of the nation's fi ghting forces and act as mu- sical goodwill ambassadors for the Army throughout the entire Southeastern United States and Puerto Rico. The band will perform at 6:00 PM; McBride will take the stage at 8:00 PM. Both concerts will be in Uptown Shelby and are open to the public at no charge. Once the games start, the military emphasis will in- crease. The 100th anniver- sary of The American Legion has a specifi c logo that will be prominent throughout the series, especially at Keeter Stadium. A special section in the Offi cial Program is dedi- cated to the anniversary of the nation's largest veterans' organization and ceremonies during the games will include recognition of the milestone. Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Harold "Hal" Fritz will be the guest speaker for a players' lunch on Friday, Aug. 16, at American Legion Post 155 in Kings Mountain and be the guest of honor at a private dinner that evening in Shelby. On Saturday, Aug. 17, USAA Military Appreciation Day, Fritz will be honored on Military Events are a major focus for 2019 American Legion World Series Veterans Field between the fi rst and second game of the day. Between the second and third game, he will lead a pro- cession of veterans onto the fi eld as members of the Crest High School Marching Band play a medley of the anthems of the fi ve military branches. Local soldiers from the N.C. Army National Guard 505th Combat Engineer Battalion, who served in the Middle East and returned from de- ployment late last year will march onto the fi eld after the veterans. The families of the returning soldiers will be seated in a cordoned area in front of the Lowe's Center for the ceremony and the game. The National Guard will pro- vide the Color Guard for that game. All active military personnel and all veterans will receive free admission to the three games that day. Making an appearance before the 1:00 PM game will be members of the N.C. Legion Riders; they will stage at Post 155 in Kings Mountain, arrive in Shelby at 11:45 AM, and ride around Keeter Stadium at noon. USAA will provide challenge coins and commemorative caps to attending veterans; the items will be available at the American Legion Post 82 tent on the third base con- course. The Legion Riders, as part of the Legacy Run, will make a major entrance into Shelby- Cleveland County on Cham- pionship Tuesday, Aug. 20. Between 400 and 500 riders, escorted by law enforcement offi cers, will come from the south and enter Cleveland County on Highway 150, then take Highway 18 into Shelby about 2:00 PM. They will travel Lafayette Street to the Court Square, then take a right on Marion Street to access Highway 74 Bypass. They will stop in Kings Moun- tain and approximately 40 Legion Riders will return to Keeter Stadium to provide the Color Guard for the game.
