August 15 - Winslow Li- ons Club meeting at 7 p.m. at the Community Center. Winslow seniors meet on Monday and Tuesday at the Community Center. Petersburg seniors meet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in the court- house basement. Petersburg Farmers Market every Saturday morning until Sept. 28 on 8th St., next to the Courthouse in Pe- tersburg. There was one note this week at Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598. July 27 was the Celebration of Life for Mark Brittain at Millers Field, where about 100 friends and family gathered. Jim Knight was so pleased to have attended that he wanted to thank Jim, Dave and Bev, and said, "That was the best send-off of a great friend." He thought of Mark quite often as a great friend to everyone he met. Winslow Patoka River is still low and the rain showers we had last Monday and Tuesday weren't enough to fill a thimble full. I may have stretched the truth a bit because we also heard one crack of thunder during those three hours of showers. The humidity was up there to go along with the 90 de- gree temps. The mowing of yards is still heard every week and when one mower is running in one yard you can hear another mower in the next, and so on in the neighborhood. The smell of cut grass is refreshing, just like smell- ing a fragrant flower, which look amaz- ing in a lot of our neighbors' yards. I still love Janie's yard, with the flowers our grandmother grew, and then the yard ornaments of different animals. We saw a squirrel climb into the ap- ple tree and it was a big one, and I also heard that the beavers are quite big al- so this year. I have just seen a new pink resurrection plant appear in the yard and it's different from our regular one that blooms in the spring around Eas- ter. It has no leaves. July 27 at the Pike County 4-H Fair was Pike County's Got Talent, put on by the Winslow and Petersburg Lions, plus 4-H, and this year, there were six contestants to be judged by the three Lions, Leroy, Keith and Lowell. In the youth division, the winner has the op- tion to compete at the In- diana State Fair. In last week's paper, on page A- 8, you would have seen the winners. Congrats to them and all who showed us Pike County has talent. The August 17 Winslow Riverside Flea Market will not take place due to lack of vendors. We were glad two vendors showed up in July. However, there was a lack of at- tendance from browsers and buyers. It wasn't the weather that kept you all away. The Winlsow Lions would like to say we had a great time with our vendors, serving food and talking to friends, old and new. We will still serve our community in other fundraisers. Hope to see all of you on Sept. 21 at the Riverside Park as part of the Winslow Community Festival and at dark for the Light-Up Winslow Parade. Also jot down on your calendar Sept. 28, when the Pike County Trac- tor Drive will start this year from Hill's Auction near Otwell. You can see a part of Pike County from the back of a trac- tor on the backroads. The descendants of John and Mary Poehlein and their eight children will have our 78th reunion on Sunday, Au- gust 11. We would like to have you at- tend to join in on all the fun we have. Our theme this year is "Under the Sea." There will be games and maybe a contest to go with this theme of mer- maids. If you have an item for an auc- tion, Greg is our auctioneer and he will have you laughing in stitches. Some of Aunt Mildred's paintings will be set out for your bidding to fill our kitty. Tell your cousins we would love to see them again. The lights are about to dim on this week of ramblings, but keep an eye on family and friends, especially during the hot and humid days to be sure they are kept cool. Slow down and don't be in such a hurry, you don't get there any faster and you miss all the beau- ty that nature has placed for you to en- joy. Slow down and stop for the school bus, and our children getting on and off the bus, as they start a new year of learning. Be kind to your neighbors, even if you don't know who they are. Always smile, wave and say Hi to ev- eryone you see this week. COMMERCIAL AND INVESTMENT PROPERTIES Hardware store ready for new owners.
