Poplar Street, Petersburg SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday and Tuesday, March 31 and April 4, 1944 The Kidwell Furniture Company, which former- ly occupied three locations on Main Street, has just un- dergone extensive redecora- tions and repairing, and will be consolidated in one build- ing, with an adjoining con- nected room. Mrs. Kidwell has a large stock of new fur- niture yet to uncrate and though business will be con- ducted as usual this coming week, the formal re-opening is set for April 8. Larry D. Gilliland was fa- tally burned Thursday af- ternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs. Kenneth Gil- liland, on Vincennes Ave. The mother's attention was attracted to the child when she heard his cries from the front porch of the home. His clothing was partly burned from the body. The child was treated by the local phy- sician and then removed to the Daviess County Hospi- tal, where he passed way the next morning at 5 o'clock. It is not know how the child's clothing was set afire, but matches were found in an up- stairs room and it is thought that he may have been play- ing with them and left the room by an outside stair- way. The mother's hands were badly burned from ex- tinguishing the flames. Births: To Mr. and Mrs. Claude Hale, an 8 lbs boy on Sunday evening; To Mr. and Mrs. William Marshallin the Miller Hospital, a 9 lb., 8 oz. boy, Richard Edward. Deaths: Charles E. John- son, 45, died suddenly at 3:30 o'clock Monday after- noon from a heart attack; Sarah Jane Wilson, 66, died at the home of her daugh- ter in Princeton on Satur- day, April 1 at 11 p.m.; Del- la Jane Telt, 64, died March 30 at 7:20 in the morning following an illness of sev- en months of a complication of diseases; Lemuel Wayne Corn, 5 months, died in Wel- born Memorial Hospital last Thursday after a short ill- ness of whooping cough and complications. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Thursday, July 2, 1959 The Oakland City Com- munity 4-H Fair will be- gin Monday night and con- tinue through Saturday, Ju- ly 6 through July 11, at the Oakland City Saddle Club grounds. A well-planned pro- gram is scheduled for a full week of entertainment and fun for all. Food and game stands, many sponsored by ar- ea organizations, and the Bak- er rides and shows will be on the midway. Willie Sakes, who has been head basketball coach at Win- slow High School for the past three years, announced Fri- day that he has resigned his position in the Winslow School system to become principal of Mackey High School in Gibson County. Hobert Russell fractured his right hand Friday while cranking a tractor at his home east of the Arthur junction on Highway 64. The fracture was reduced at the Oakland City Hospital. Marriages: Nancy Hayes and Cary Burch were mar- ried Saturday evening at 6 o'clock on June 27 in the Ot- well Methodist Church; Patri- cia Williams and Tommy Lee Barnett were united in mar- riage on Saturday, June 20 at 4 p.m. in the Mt. Olive Gener- al Baptist Church; Nancy Jen- kins and Alfred Stewart were wed Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Methodist Church in Oak- land City; Joyce Schafer and Michael David Plummer were united in marriage at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the First Methodist Church in Peters- burg. Deaths: Lester J. Troxler, 64, of Logan Township, died suddenly at the family resi- dence at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday; Etta Wilson, 81, of Glezen, died at the home of her daugh- ter at 8 a.m. Wednesday. FIFTY YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, July 17, 1969 A one-car accident at 6:25 p.m. Saturday on SR 356, three and one-half miles west of Otwell, sent three children to the Jasper Memorial Hos- pital. Anthony Dean Blythe, 4, of Petersburg, received lac- erations to his left eye; Car- la Deanne Blythe, 5, also of Petersburg, received a possi- ble concussion, abrasions and bruises; and George Mont- gomery, 10, of Evansville, re- ceived lacerations of the left leg and arm. All were occu- pants in a 1960 Oldsmobile driven by Geraldine Blythe, 26. The car was enroute west on 356 and just over the crest of a hill, it came upon a slow moving tractor. In trying to avoid colliding with the rear of the tractor, the car went off the road and struck a bridge abutment. The car was a to- tal loss. Jesse I. Evans, 36, was treated at St. Joseph's Hospi- tal in Huntingburg for injuries received in an accident Friday at 11 a.m. Mr. Evans, an em- ployee of Empire Gas, was headed north on SR 61 in a one-ton company truck when he met a southbound car on a hill one and half miles north of Coe, which crowded him off the highway. The truck went into the deep ditch on the right side of the road. Mr. Evans' head knocked out the door glass on the right side of the truck. Two unidentified men found him unconscious n the truck. Deaths: Arvel Norrington, 54, of Winslow, died Monday, July 14 after a three year ill- ness of a malignant tumor of the brain; Mrs. Pearl Trout- man Wilson, 81, of Peters- burg, died in the Wabash Gen- eral Hospital in Mt. Carmel, Ill. from a heart ailment. TWENTY- FIVE YEARS The Press-Dispatch Thursday, June 30, 1994 Area policed captured a fu- gitive Friday afternoon in Pe- tersburg who was wanted for strong-arm robbery and auto theft, but not before they had to coax him down out of a tree at gun point. Ross E. Kirk, 29, of Vincennes, was arrested at about 4 p.m. last Friday after a short chase on foot and then a standoff in a tree. A Friday morning crash to- taled two vehicles and a house as the driver of a van appar- ently went to sleep and ran off the road, then rammed in- to a pickup parked by a house, knocking it through two walls of the house. Edward Ruppel, 61, of Lawrenceville, Ill., was driving north on Highway 257, about two miles north of Otwell, when he ran off the road and hit William Marsee's truck. It was pushed through the wall into the living room and over a couch where Mar- see typically sleeps. Marsee works night shift and normal- ly lays down on the couch, but luckily went to his bedroom Friday. Marriages: Shelia Craig and Brandon Goodrid were united in marriage June 4 in the Petersburg Church of the Nazarene at 2:30 p.m. Deaths: Emma Dersch, 101, of Oakland City, died Sunday, June 26 at 4:45 p.m. at Wirth Hospital in Oak- land City; Arber L. Hayes, 82, of Winslow, died Tues- day, June 21 at Amber Man- or Care Center in Petersburg; Iva I. Howard, 70, of Oakland City, died Monday, June 27 at 12:20 a.m. at St. Mary's Med- ical Center in Evansville; El- za (Mike) Faries, 88, of Coe, died Friday, June 24 at 5:15 p.m. at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville; Mark A.
