There was one postcard this week at Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598. Postcard 663 has a colorful sunrise over a flat ground with mountains in the far background. A tall leafy tree hovers over a wheeled cannon and cannonballs are sitting on a concrete base. In the background is a statue of a soldier and up front are several large stones and a marker. The words say, "Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1- 3, 1863," above the U.S. flag and the Confederate flag. This is the battlefield at Gettysburg, where 50,000 of the 165,000 men who did battle there were casualties. When the smoke cleared on July 4, 1863, after three days of fight- ing, there were more dead than there were residents of Gettysburg. The bat- tle itself marked a turning point in the Civil War, already two years old. It reads, "Hi Sweets, we stopped here at Gettysburg to show our neph- ews, Brandon, Corey and Parker Goep- pner, all the sites of this awesome bat- tlefield. Everyone learns more about history when they are here. It's almost impossible to believe the amount of men who died here. Max and Cheryl Carlisle, Stendal, Ind." We also loved the history of postcard 663 of Gettysburg battlefield and being there must have brought this event to life back in the year of 1863. Thanks again for this history. The Patoka River in Winslow is low and the storm we had Sunday night wasn't enough to help the river rise. The storm only caused more limbs to break and fall in our corner lot and caused my Black-eyed Susans to bend over. Our squirrel was seen near the Normulance and then climbed our small tree, but when I started talking to it, it scampered down that tree and climbed the bigger walnut tree. I men- tioned we have one hummingbird feed- ing on three feeders of sugar water, but when I was talking to my sister, Ter- ri Ann, there were three humming- birds. Yay! I mentioned last week we were out to get new tread for the truck and we got two back tires that doll up the truck a bit. When we noticed the flat tire, we were on our way to the Winslow Lions meet- ing. As my dad always said, "It's only flat on the bottom." As Norm was airing up our spare tire, I called Leroy to get a ride and he sent me an Uber driver by the name of Pat. You have heard stories of Ubers, so I joked that, that would be fine. I know the driver. It wasn't too long and Norm made it to our meeting. I re- ally appreciate my driver, Pat. Last weekend, July 19 -20, was the Heart for a Hero event at the Sports League, where several ball players had fun in the hot, humid sun. Lugnutz had the bands, which played into the night. Saturday, around 10 p.m., I heard fire- works go off and looked outside to see the lighted lanterns floating across the sky through the trees, and then again at 11 p.m. more fireworks. The Winslow Lions Club had their regular flea market at Riverside Park, where we served breakfast and lunch for only a few stars who came down to that area. We thought we were part of this event because they asked us, but we were there anyway and we also had a great time in the shade with two of our regular vendors. Our next flea market will be August 17. Our Lions Club flea markets are a fundraiser for our group and we also give back to our community with the entry fee. I know that these past two months have been hot and a lot humid, but maybe August 17 will be a lot better and not so hot. All our Pike County children will start school soon and the buses will be on the roads again. The schools will have new students and those regular students, but in a new grade of learn- ing. To all the students, make your learning a fun project because if you love what you learn, it will help you achieve that higher A, B or C in your studies. Don't forget to ask for help if you don't understand something. Have a great year. To all our Poehlein descendants of the eight children of John and Mary, we will have fun at our 78th reunion on August 11, with the meal beginning at noon EDT at the Winslow Communi- ty Center, where you will have load of laughter, hugs and kisses, and fun, fun, fun with family you may only see once a year. Our theme this year is "Under the Sea." The 14th Winslow Community Fes- tival and Light-Up Parade isn't too far away as of now on Sept. 21 with food, music, games, rides and a lot more fam- ily fun all day and night.
