Women's Cancer Support Group–The Lange-Fuhs Cancer Center at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center offers a support group for women who have had cancer of any type or are currently undergoing can- cer treatment. Sessions are the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Lange-Fuhs Cancer Center Conference Room, located at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center's Dorbett Street entrance. "Creating Hope" For Cancer Patients–Memori- al Hospital and Health Care Center is offering Creat- ing Hope® sessions on the first and second Tuesday of each month from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. These sessions are de- signed for cancer patients, their families and caregivers. Art materials and an instructional book are available at each session. No previous art experience is needed. Heartsaver First Aid with CPR & AED–Be pre- pared to respond to an emergency by taking the Heart- saver First Aid with CPR & AED course. Memorial Hos- pital and Health Care Center is now offering this class in two evening sessions. The next class will be held on Tuesdays, August 6 and 13 from 5:30 –9:30 p.m. in the Health and Wellness Classroom at Memorial Southside Office, 1100 West 12th Avenue in Jasper. This American Heart Association course provides information on how to manage illness and injuries in the first few minutes of an emergency until profession- al help arrives. Skills taught include CPR, AED use, re- lief of choking in adults and children, and infant CPR and relief of choking. In order to complete the course and receive a course completion card, participants must pass a written first aid test and successfully complete a skills evaluation in CP T and AED. Pre-registration is required, as class size is limited. Cost is $ 85 and the class requires pre-payment. Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Caregiver Support Group – Dementia is a brain disorder that seriously affects a person's ability to carry out daily ac- tivities. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia among senior citizens. It involves the parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language. Memorial's Caring Hands Senior Services sponsors an Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Caregiver Sup- port Group on the first Wednesday of each month. The next meeting is Wednesday, August 7, 2019, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Board Conference Room A, which is located on the lower level of Memorial Hospital near the Tower Café at 800 West 9th Street in Jasper. This support group allows caregivers to come together to share knowledge and experiences in caring for loved ones who are affect- ed by these illnesses. Highway Dept. starts paving The Pike County Highway Department was out paving Tuesday morning on CR 250 W. Assistant High- way Superintendent Josh Byrd said it was being paved from Highway 56 to where the newer blacktop started, about a half-mile east of Cart Road (CR 350 N.). Byrd said this road was not part of the Com- munity Crossroad grant, which combined with Pike County's matching money was $701,000. He said they will move to CR 375 W. and pave it between Highway 56 and Cart Road next. Then they are going to pave Division Road between CR 500 W. and CR 700 W. PCCF accepting applications for Community Good Grant The Pike County Community Foun- dation announces the opening of its 2019 -20 Community Good Grant Cy- cle on Friday, August 2, 2019. Deadline for applications is midnight on Friday, September 13, 2019. All 501(c)3 organizations that are ei- ther headquartered in or provide ser- vices in Pike County may apply.
