The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, July 31, 2019 C-1 CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg "...the house of God...is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth" (I Timothy 3:15). The word "pillar" should remind every Bi- ble student of the pillar that God gave Isra- el to guide them through the wilderness to the promised land (Nehemiah 9:12). A fter the people of Israel crossed the Red Sea, they needed a guide. They had been slaves for 400 years, and didn't have a clue as to where they were going! It's not like Pharaoh let his slaves take exploratory vacations. So God had to lead them every step of the way with the pillar. Once Moses had written the Book of the Law, however, the pillar disappeared. Of course! Now they had a Book to guide them every step of the way. No matter where they went in life, they had a reliable Guide to teach them how to walk and please God. And now that Book has been completed and resides in the local church! No wonder God calls the church the pillar of the truth! God's people should follow that Book as closely as the Jews followed their pillar. How close- ly was that? "...when the cloud tarried... then the children of Israel...journeyed not... when the cloud... was taken up... then they jour- neyed..." (Numbers 9:18 -22). When the pillar moved, they moved. When it rested, they rested. In other words, they didn't make a move without the bene- fit of its guidance. Does that sound like a good way to follow the Book today? Beloved, God has graciously given us a Guide that can help us navigate the most treacherous paths of life. The One who steers the stars ( Job 38:32) has deigned to guide the lives of His people. May we never forsake His direction! This great Guide has further equipped us with a place to meet to hear His Book taught. If there is no church near you where God's rightly divided Word is taught in all its clari- ty, continue to share the gospel with the lost and Pauline truth with the saved. The people with whom you share God's guidance just might want to start meeting at your house to discuss it. And God has a word for such meetings—He calls it church (Rom. 16:5; I Cor. 16:19; Col. 4:15; Philemon 1:2). These references to churches that met in homes are especially significant when we re- member how small the homes were in those days. There's a reason the Lord had to send the apostles out to find a home large enough for twelve men to eat the Passover (Mark 14:12-16). Such rooms are not that uncom- mon today, but they were then! Thus Paul's allusions to churches that met in those hum- ble homes tells us that the smallest of gath- erings is a church in God's eyes, one that He will be pleased to call His house, the pillar and ground of the truth in your community. A wise person once said, "Who- ever controls our schools rules the world." This statement is easier to understand as we learn more about the Arab nations and Muslims, in particular. The philosophy of the classroom in this generation will be the philosophy of the next generation. Our founding fathers understood a val- ue-based education. That's why, after build- ing homes and churches, they built schools. They soon established educational institu- tions like Harvard, Yale and Columbia to educate the mind and promote Christian faith. Now most of these once great insti- tutions are a hollow shell of the values and faith they once taught. Today most institu- tions think facts, not character, are what build a good society. The humanists took advantage of our spiritual apathy and grad- ually shaped and took control of our educa- tional institutions. Our schools have been used as a vehicle for social change from Karl Marx to Adolph Hitler to secular hu- manism. Many politi- cal leaders are social- ist. This is a sad day for America. The war of ideas is fought in the class- room. It is here that absolute truth, the Bible, and values are destroyed. Chris- tians should be serious about protecting the minds and hearts of our children. In my opinion, children should learn dis- cipline, values, respect and honesty while they are learning math, science and other important facts. If we are to change Amer- ica we must put God back in our schools. The Ten Commandments never caused shootings in our schools or drug addiction. Parents need to be informed and involved in the future of our beloved America. It is time to welcome a new week of daily activities into existence. Last week was an- other busy one and this week has promise of being just as busy. We babysit with our grandchildren nearly every day and we often find ourselves confined to quarters. The grandson and I built a new mailbox pole because our old one had just about rot- ted down. We took the old apart enough to use the pieces as a pattern. It turned out fair- ly well but we still need to put our name on it and reflective numbers on both sides of it to comply with 911 needs. The postman came by to deliver our mail and said the height from the ground should be close to 42 inches. He made it around the circle just as we were finishing putting it in- to the ground and I guess it passed because we got an approval from him. My wife and I are not getting younger so we are really seri- ous about putting on the reflective numbers. That way if we ever have to call for an ambu- lance they will be able to find us. We took Willow to Walmart last week to get some medicine and other necessities. She was admired by almost everyone who saw her. She did win second place in the cut- est baby contest, but like I said last week she will always be a winner in my mind. Talking about the fair, there was lots of stuff going on and the 4H council and the parking crew was very tired from their ef- forts. On Saturday the Pike County's Got Talent contest was held and I was one of the judg- es of the contestant's performances. Some of the acts were easy to judge but two young ladies competing against one another was so close that the judges had their hands full. Their hearts broken whenever they had to score them. I'm not sure I have the heart to break another's heart from such a close de- cision. I'm certain this will be addressed be- fore next year's contest and hopefully there will be no broken hearts. The parking was different than I have ev- er seen done before. It parked many more cars in the field next to the cabin, however it was tight enough that it took me about 10 minutes of squirming back and forth to get past the truck parked in the row behind us. Maybe next year the rows might need to be a little farther apart to eliminate this concern. I might suggest the parking tickets could be pre-purchased this might speed up the entry to the parking area ( just a thought). Sunday school covered more from Micah and he had a prophecy which showed that Israel would again find grace in the eyes of God and the nations which had been so cru- el to them will shirk in fear of God. If God is for you who can be against you, because God does care for his children. Micah was look- ing to be under God's care again. It appears their oppressions had been so long they just had stories of God's glory and not one person has it as a memory. It is true that God's word will always carry on by someone. The sermon lesson was about you have faith, now what do you do with it. First be thankful your salvation came about because you had faith. God has extended His grace to you. You are one of His children and know you have been saved from eternal punish- ment. Your faith should cause you to have a know so salvation is not a I hope so salvation. Well as per usual let us go into the world and do our best to be there for someone who God has put in your path. Be a blessing and be blessed. 4933 E. Co.
