When I used to think about being fair it, usually concerned playing by the rules and treat- ing the other side with dignity. You treated individuals the same as close as you could. But lately I understand that not all people need the same amount of help and not all situations are equal. Stam Continued on page 2 Where Have Our Values Gone Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin Values have slowly disappeared from the American landscape. Even words like free- dom and liberty have been given new defi- nitions. Our civil laws have been redefined as a result of anti-American socialists. Val- ues are just another word that has lost its true meaning. The values and laws that de- fine America gave us dignity and freedom. The new American culture first attacked our Christian values and then came the at- tack on our civil laws. Today we have ma- ny political leaders who are socialists and anti-God. Many are shocked, distressed and won- der how this change could happen in our beloved country. Did the politicians let us down? Did our pastors become so seeker sensitive they failed to warn about popular sins? Did our institutions of higher learn- ing cause the problem? Maybe it was the elite media. In my opinion the liberal media has be- come America's greatest enemy. They con- stantly define right as wrong and wrong is called right. Day af- ter day they show us only part of the sto- ry and with sound bites attack morali- ty. There is a vicious attack daily on Chris- tianity, family values, and conservative po- litical leaders. They distort Christian val- ues and glorify evil of every kind. They have the money, power and media to put their spin on any news item and make decency and true values look out- dated and irrelevant to our day. They ham- mer away day after day until people begin to believe their liberal ideas and forget the Bible and our great American heritage. Any one who lifts a voice of opposition is imme- diately cut down and destroyed. A society without values and civil law cannot stand forever. As we examine the Bible one fact stands out with particular emphasis and clarity: The Bible was written for the people, for the populace at large, not for some special class among them. St. Paul addressed his epistles to both "la- ity" and "clergy": "To all that be in Rome" (Rom. 12), "unto the church… at Corinth… with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord" (I Cor. 1:2), "unto the churches of Galatia" (Gal. 1:2), "to all the saints… at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons" (Phil. 1:1), etc. When Paul proclaimed the gospel at Berea his hearers did not take even this great apostle's word for granted, but "searched the Scriptures daily, wheth- er those things were so," and for this God called them "noble" (Acts 17:11). They were the true spiritual aristocracy of their day. Our Lord, when on earth, encouraged — even challenged His audiences to "search the Scriptures" for themselves ( John 5:39). Indeed, since God has revealed Him- self and His plan of salvation in the written Word, we are responsible, each one for him- self, to study the Scriptures. When Dives begged Abraham to allow Lazarus to go and warn his five brothers about the horrors of Hades, Abraham replied: "They have Moses and the prophets, let them hear them," and when Dives urged that a word from Laza- rus would be more effective, Abraham an- swered: "If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuad- ed though one rose from the dead" (Luke 16:29 -31). Do not depend upon your clergyman to interpret the Scriptures for you but see for yourself what they say, for "every one of us shall give account of himself to God" (Rom. 14:12), and it will not be enough in that day to say: "But my minister or priest told me…" You are responsible to "search the Scrip- tures" for yourself to "see whether those things are so." I left off last week telling that perhaps the farming chores would be beginning and it rains again. I hope we don't run out of rain when we need it desperately. This is called trusting God because only He really knows what we need and when we need it and it seems if we are patient with Him, things will work out. Do you ever sit and let your mind remem- ber people who have passed during your life? I sometimes think about the things they did to leave a mark on this old world. I sometimes catch myself thinking "hmm by golly on the thing," as my friend Milliard Goodrid would often say when he was look- ing over a job. And I think about my father being kidded about being Ole Kawliga the wooden headed Indian. I wonder if anyone will miss me and being the Lulu which I car- ried as a nickname for many years. As important as we all are, our jobs will be carried on. The results may be a little different, our life roles will carry on. Enjoy your life and be thankful for anything good which separates you from the world. Never worry because God has a job for you in this life and it will be accomplished and when you can't do it any longer God will raise up someone to carry on. So when you feel down and don't feel like going on, just know you See R AMBLINGS on 3 4 His Praise in concert at Gentle Shepherd Church of God Gentle Shepherd Church of God, located at 8350 E. 350 N. "No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly" (Psalm 84:11). Many times we make the mistake of thinking that Christ's help is needed on- ly for sickrooms or in times of overwhelming sorrow and suffering. This is not true. Certainly, God is with us in times of distress and that is a comforting truth. But Jesus wants to be part of every ex- perience and every moment of our lives.
