February 15, 2013 Page 7 Sports Recent tourney raises wrestlers hopes Sarah Bartlett Staff Writer The Red Bluff High School Wrestling team participated in a League Tournament at Shasta last Saturday, February 9. RBHS competed against many other high schools in the area, a few of them being West Valley, Enterprise, Foothill, Chico, Durham, and Shasta. The team was very confident that they would win. According to Erik Fulk, senior, a lot of wrestlers on the team have done very well this season, many of them even being undefeated in the league, himself included. RayAnn Lockett, freshman, was very confident that she could beat one of her opponents, a student from Shasta, which would have been her first win of the season. Lockett also had a lot of faith that her teammates could beat their opponents, too. Lockett planned to shoot out more, which is where she grabs her opponents leg and takes them down. The entire team works very has a good attitude. According to Michaela Black, freshman, Rottenberg doesnt get mad or anything when they lose. To him, its not all about winning as long as they do the moves correctly. All of this adds up to their successful four wins at their duels and only two losses. As of the 13 of February team did well at the League Tournament. A few members of the team even got first place in their respective weight classes. Miguel Blanchard, freshman, got first place in Junior Varsity. Tucker Gulliford, senior, got first place in Varsity. Kyle Case, senior, got first place in Varsity as well. Caitlyn Igarta (9) Basketball: When we had team bonding because we had a lot of fun. V girls basketball prepares for playoffs Mark Criss Staff Writer Red Bluff High School girl varsity players are smashing through most competition in this years run through league. Moving on past league Red Bluff High School girls went into the playoffs very confidently just as they did going into Shastas game last night, we are confident for a win, we already beat them twice, said Adrienne Hinkston, junior. What that says for the Red Bluff High School varsity girls is unpredictable. Payten Mckerras, Red Bluffs Highs center, and only freshman on Red Bluff High schools varsity team said it is exiting to be a freshman on the team. According to Mckerras, to prepare for the playoffs her team is keeping in good shape and doing just all around practice. Mckerras believes she was chosen to be on Red High Schools varsity team because she has great height and good skills out on the court. The only worries that Red Bluff High Schools varsity girls are having is whether or not they are mentally prepared. Were mentally unprepared, said Hinkston. Which is exactly what the pink out was perfect for, with all the screaming fans it would motivate most. With the results of last nights pink out I think it is easy to see what motivation really does for Red Bluff High Schools varsity girls. Red Bluff Highs varsity girls team is down for numbers. The team is not only mentally hurt; it only has five to six people playing. The original number of team members was eleven physically healthy players. So, the major question that is currently up for grabs is whether or not Red Bluff High Schools varsity girls Joseph Bosetti (10) Basketball: Winning the Jackson tournament because it was fun hanging out with friends away from school and I got MVP. BLUFFER/Shelby Keeler Senior Lily Brose runs by Senior Jessica Macdonald to pull off a up close shot. basketball team is able to handle the competition of playoffs? Well, as said before by Hinkston, theyre just as confident going into the playoffs as they were going into Shastas game last night. Although losing 3 players to injuries, hopes are high for the Lady Spartans and they are excited to make a playoff run. A playoff run would mean the world to me, to end my basketball career as a section champ would be incredible, said Maggie Hansen, senior. Boys soccer team comes to a disappointing end players reflect on season and hope to do better next season Sahvanna Rice Staff Writer This season, the boys soccer team at Red Bluff High didnt meet their expectations. Although they played hard, tried their best, and put all of their focus into their practices and games, the odds were just not in their favor this year. According to senior, Alex Fausto, who plays forward; before every game the team gets motivated by getting in a big huddle and Freddy Herrera, senior, who plays defense, motivates the team. Unfortunately, for the team, their motivation can only go so far. With a season record of two wins, the boys motivation was not enough. Marco Ramirez, a senior who plays defense, is also an outstanding motivator and player. He always reminds the boys to play strong and hard. According to Fausto, A great soccer player is someone who can pass, shoot, and dribble. Mike Stone, junior, who also plays forward, is an important asset to the team. His leadership on the field sets a good picture for every player. Hes fast and he is consistent with scoring goals, said Fausto. Cesar Maltonado, also plays forward, plays a big part on the team by having faith in everything they do. A teams faith in each player is important because it keeps a positive atmosphere for the players. This season, the coach did a great job of keeping belief in his players and keeping them motivated for every game. The coach taught his players how to pass the ball, take shots, and make plays. The importance of playing as a team is always a high priority. The boys varsity team showed faith and teamwork by always having motivation and a friendly atmosphere. Summing up the season, Alex Fausto said, Im a little disappointed losing all those games but it was fun playing the game I have a passion for. The boys played their hearts this season and through the many adjustments they had to make, they pulled together as a team and won their final game against West Valley bringing their overall record to 2 wins, and 12 losses.
