Poplar Street, Petersburg NEWS BRIEFS Severe weather spotter training April 9 The Dubois County Emergency Management Agen- cy, in conjunction with the National Weather Service in Louisville, will hosting Severe Weather Spotter Train- ing on April 9 at 6:30 p.m. EDT at Vincennes Universi- ty Jasper Campus, Classroom Building Lecture Hall, 850 College Avenue, Jasper. The training is free of charge and is open to anyone across the region, including weather spotters, emer- gency responders and the general public. The topics covered will include identifying and reporting severe weather, severe weather safety, severe weather clima- tology, thunderstorm types and the related threats. Joe Sullivan, Warning Coordinating Meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office in Louisville, will be conducting the training. Registration is not re- quired to attend. Free Hands-On Rain Garden workshop scheduled for April 9 Rusty Schmidt, Landscape Ecologist, is coming back to Jasper on Tuesday, April 9 to present a Hands- On Rain Garden workshop. Schmidt will focus on ex- isting rain gardens and how to judge their health, and how to do annual maintenance. This free workshop is hosted by the Middle Patoka River Watershed, and the Dubois and Pike County Soil and Water Conservation Districts. The workshop will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT on the Vincennes Uni- versity Jasper Campus, in the CTIM theatre. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. Part of the workshop will be out- doors, assessing and performing light maintenance on the Campus' Rain Garden. This workshop is for homeowners, gardeners, Mas- ter Naturalists, conservation and landscape profession- als, Master Gardeners, and anyone interested in grow- ing beautiful plants while improving water quality. The workshop is free, but pre-registration by April 2, is a must to ensure plenty of supplies. The program included performances by the combined classrooms of kindergarten, first and second grades. The kindergarten classes perform hand motions and sang "Baby Shark."
