The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, November 21, 2018 C-1 CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg It is strange but true that most people — even the great majority of religious peo- ple — do not know what a church is. Ask the average man what a church is, and he's apt to reply: "Well, anybody knows that! A church is a building where people go to wor- ship God." But this is not correct. The word translated church, in our Bibles, simply means assembly. A church is not a building, but the assembly that meets in the building. Technically, a church is not even a religious gathering, for the same word is used in Acts 19:32 of a riotous mob which had assembled at Ephesus, and this verse says that this as- sembly was confused and that "the greater part knew not wherefore they were come to- gether." Perhaps this could apply to many a church today, but the point is that a church is not a building but an assembly of people. The church of which the Bible has most to say is "the Church of God, which He ha- th purchased with His own blood" (Acts 20 :28), and St. Paul calls the church of this present dispensation, "the Body of Christ," or "the Church which is His Body" (I Cor. 12:27; Eph. 1:22,23). Men cannot join this Church by water baptism or any other religious rite, but on- ly by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. With re- gard to believers in Christ St. Paul declares: "By one Spirit are we all baptized into one Body" (I Cor. 12:13). And in Rom. 12:5 the Apostle says that "ye, being many, are one body in Christ." Many sincere people have had their names on local church rolls for many years before learning this great truth — that the true Church of God is not a building, but the assembly of those who trust in Christ as their Savior. Doubtless, people in and out of many of the religious organizations we call churches belong to this one great Bi- ble Church, while others, with all their re- ligious profession, do not. The question is: Have we sincerely trusted in Christ as the Savior who died for our sins? Well something new to start my ram- blings with, this was a different week with many things happening It started out fair- ly normal by unloading the pantry truck fol- lowed by lots of leaf mowing. The new Cy- clone rake is coming in piece by piece and not near enough to start building the whole machine. I've still got lots of leaves to put it to work whenever it gets in from the Ex- press truck. We baby sat with the grandson a couple of days and he is a challenge keeping up with sometimes. Dennis the Menence had a car- toon which reminded me of Wyatt where he had all his toys out and told his dad, I don't what it is but I made it myself." Wyatt can get out every toy he has and then play with mamaw's pots and pans. He is quite a kid and we are really proud to have him around because it is never boring. Wednesday was double down day as Con- nie had jury duty selection while I had a Doctors appointment in Evansville. She wasn't selected and my appointment went well because I don't have to go back for a year and got rid of a medicine, so I suppose it turned out to be a good day. Friday was a shopping day at Sam's and about $400 later we were ready to go home with our treasures. Relief was cut short as I got a phone call from my daughter-in-law who is activity director at Golden Living and she told me I was suppose to bring Bible study for the residents in the afternoon so The Church Page is made possible by the following Firms and Businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin Minutes with the Bible by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam Continued on page 2 Atheism has been around for a long time. Their cause is gaining ground with the re- cent publication of books promoting these anti "God" beliefs. They boldly proclaim that it is stupid to believe in a personal God. The popularity of recent books on atheism is thriving on a new sense of individualism. Many of the converts to atheism are young, well educated men. These atheists say all religion is evil and faith and reason cannot coexist. They say society should replace faith with science. They argue that since we cannot prove the existence of God in a test tube, there is no God. The popularity of the anti-God books at this point in history has been fueled by the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and ter- ror. The lack of deep, sincere commitment to the Bible and Jesus Christ has encour- aged this new interest in atheism. These God haters write books such as "God Is Not Great" and "How Religion Poi- sons." The best offense against false reli- gions like atheism, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism is the Christian faith in the lives of people. The Bible has stood the test for centu- ries and Jesus Christ has brought hope, forgiveness, joy and peace to humanity for more than 2,000 years. Deep in the heart of all mankind is a de- sire to know God. All men, sometime in their lives, long to know God and have an eternal connection. Everyone who believes in God has an anchor for his or her soul. The Christian faith alone gives assurance that when we die we will go to heaven. A relation- ship with Christ is the most satisfying thing in the entire world. Nothing can compare with being a true disciple of Jesus Christ. we hurried up in order to be able to fulfill my obligations for the residents. We were able to play music for Emerald Place and Brookside nursing homes this week and had a great time entertaining the residents. We still have a couple of nursing homes to play at this month coupled with some Christmas sings to go before we fin- ish up this year. I always become amused whenever people say they don't know what they will do when they retire. I do believe we could show them the other side of re- tirement.
