WITH APPROVED CREDIT By Janice Barniak SG Star-Times Editor editor@sgstartimes.com For those who want to do the most good with their holiday gift-buying this year, Debbie Lamey, of Holder's Furniture, rec- ommends buying made- in-America furniture from their family-owned busi- ness and creating a ripple effect to support U.S. jobs at Christmas. When a person buys bedding from Holder's, for exam- ple, the family calls up to New Albany, Ind., where it might be made by Hoosier hands on Monday and delivered to the Owensville location later that week. Then their own family delivers and builds it, giving the customer a 90 -day sleep trial so they can be sure they're happy with their choice. They have other Midwestern manufacturers and can help people choose recliners, T V consoles and other pop- ular gifts at competitive prices. Monty Lamey added buying U.S.-made is gaining ground. "People want to buy American for a lot of reasons. Of course, part of it is people want to avoid the tariffs," he said, referring to recent legislation that can increase costs on furniture coming in overseas. For 144 years, through three generations, Holder's has been a family-owned business, and Debbie said it makes them feel good to know that when they bring in furniture made in Indiana or Kentucky or somewhere else in the U.S., they're giving a livelihood to other families. The Lamey family has had a year of changes as well. They've redone the showroom and started to do a lot more in the luxury flooring market. "People like the luxury vinyl flooring because it's easy to clean and water resistant, which makes it good for fam- ilies," she said. This year, they have Black Friday deals that include $499 leather rocker recliners, and $299 chairs that they expect to be some of the hottest gifts, though the whole line will be on sale, from tables and chairs to curios and decor. Debbie expects gray to continue as the dominant neutral color for home fur- niture. T V consoles and enter- tainment centers tend to be popular as well because a lot of people take advan- tage of Black Friday to up- grade their electronics at a big box store, then want a quality display for the new T V. They expect the new line of reclining sofas to also do well as gifts for women. "Women hate the look of reclining sofas," Debbie said. "So they have a line that gives it the non-reclining, tra- ditional sofa look." The line, by La-Z-Boy, is called the Duo. "It's her style with his comfort," said Monty. The family will host a Christmas open house Dec. 6 -8, where they hope everyone in the neighborhood will come to enjoy refreshments and see the remodeled store ar- eas. On Dec. 6 and 7, they'll have extended store hours. They have an auction planned, where shoppers will earn tickets that could win prizes and gift certificates from local businesses in a drawing on Christmas Eve. They've also spent the year cultivating new ways to connect with their clients, including having people "like" them on Facebook, and updating HoldersFurniture.net to reach out. In short, they're hoping that people who love coming home for the holidays will think of shopping their home- town Holder's Furniture to support not just their family and local business, but to bless all the families with a hand in the quality furniture they're selling this Christmas.
