"She's a good kid. She's going to work hard. She's going to do what you tell her to do. She's very coachable. I expect her to have a good freshman year. She's one of those kids you want to keep progress- ing because, next year, she's probably going to be a varsi- ty level player, after we lose these seven seniors. So it's going to be a big year for her to continue to improve and gain confidence." Mallory Hunt "She's a big strong kid with good hands," Mc- Cutchan said. "She's our tall- est kid, who's going to play some varsity. She's one who will stay after practice and ask questions. She wants to get better and I think she's got a bright future for us as well. She's probably going to be a little more jayvee than varsity, but I always tell them, if you want to be varsity, go earn it, go take it. I don't care who plays. I'm looking forward to see- ing her play this year. Once we can get her to finish con- sistently, she's going to be good." Kya Leighty "She's one of those kids you look at and you think, 'My gosh, she's just a heck of an athlete,'" McCutchan said. "She's 5 -8, 5 -9, long arms, fast, can jump. Once she gets comfortable with everything we're doing and gets confident, she's go- ing to be really good. She's one of those kids that you can see a really bright fu- ture for because – like I was talking about with Jayln – she's just so physically gift- ed. They can do things oth- er girls can't do. Once her skills catch up to her athletic ability, she's going to be one heck of a player. It's just go- ing to take a little time, but she's going to get there." Hailey Parker "She's another freshman who battles hard every day," McCutchan said. "She's a pretty good shooter, but it's all about just getting confi- dence. All of the freshmen, I'd say confidence is their biggest thing because it's just tough to come up and compete with kids who's been through the system three or four years. She's a hard worker. Our goal is to maybe get her range a lit- tle bit further. She's going to get minutes on the jay- vee, so it'll be a good year for her to grow and get bet- ter as a player." Erika Vinnedge "She's a big, tall, strong kid," McCutchan said. "She hasn't played basket- ball since fifth grade, so she's behind. But she's re- ally improved, and she's go- ing to continue to improve. She just needs game expe- rience. When you haven't played in four years, it's tough to pick up on a lot of things. But she's working hard. She stays after prac- tice and talked to ( junior varsity head coach) Aubree (Block) and asks her a mil- lion questions. That's good." The Lady Chargers – who won two of their first five games last season – have started off the 2018 -19 season 3-2, with wins over Evansville Reitz, South Knox and Wood Memorial and losses to Boonville and Vincennes Lincoln. As of Friday, Nov. 16, Nel- son is leading Pike Central in scoring with 10 points per game while Vaughn is aver- aging 8.8 points per game. Horrall is averaging a team- leading 4.0 rebounds per game while Crow and Nel- son are averaging 2.4 as- sists per game. Hickey, meanwhile, is averaging 1.8 steals per game. "The start of the year is big for us, to try to build con- fidence, with newer varsity level players," McCutchan said. "People ask me, and they may even think I'm cra- zy, but I think we're going to win more than we did last year. Our balance is pretty good this year." "A lot of teams, they watched film on us, they looked to take Erika away and make other kids beat them," McCutchan added. 'We don't have that kid, but we have a lot of kids who can fill roles. I don't expect any- body to average 20 points on our team, but there could be nights where we have kids score 20." McCutchan noted that, last season, the Lady Char- gers suffered only four dou- ble-digit losses last season – a 55 -30 loss to Vincennes Lincoln, a 63-47 loss to Gib- son Southern, a 50 -29 loss to Loogootee and a 49 -37 loss to Heritage Hills. "Last year, there were on- ly three games we really had no chance to win, in the fourth quarter," McCutchan said. "At Heritage Hills, it was a five-point game at, like, the six-minute mark in the fourth quarter." "We gave ourselves a chance to win," McCutchan added. "Now, this year, let's get over that hump. I'm not going to say we're going to go 19 -3, but I think if we give ourselves a chance, hopeful- ly, we can pull a few more of those out. We're going to be a different type of team, but I think we're going to be a skilled team." Pictured above are the 2018-19 Pike Central High School cheerleaders. "It kind of takes some of that pressure off," Mike Bohnert said. "She can kind of just relax and just start worrying about swimming and not worry about every- body calling and sending e-mails. We thought it'd be best just to get it out of the way and just kind of go with the senior year and have a good time and enjoy what she's worked towards all this time. And she's worked hard at it." Mike Bohnert is being assisted this season by his wife, Beth Bohnert, and Missy Sparks Wilkerson, who works with the divers. "I think we'll be alright," Mike Bohnert said. "We don't have the numbers. It's one of those sports where, to be competitive, you've got to have a lot of kids. So we'll work on building depth and work on building strength and try to be as competitive individually as we can and go from there."
