The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, July 18, 2018 C-1 CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg "And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand. And Joshua went unto him, and said unto him. Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his ser- vant? " ( Josh. 5:13,14). God had appointed Joshua to lead the people of Israel into the land of Canaan. It was just before the battle of Jericho that the great leader looked up to see a man with a drawn sword facing him. His sudden ap- pearance must have startled Joshua, but he showed no trace of fear — not Joshua! Advancing toward the man Joshua de- manded: "Art thou for us or for our adver- saries? " No wonder the answer brought him to his knees! He had been standing face to face with the captain of the Lord's hosts, no doubt Michael, the angelic prince of Israel (See Dan. 10 :21 and 12:1). The question was not whose side was the angel of God on, but whose side was Joshua on! Was he himself in harmony with God's will? What a lesson to learn! In the constant battle over truth and error there is a tenden- cy for Christians to demand of other Chris- tians: "Whose side are you on? Are you for us or for our adversaries? " If this is as far as we have gotten in our service for the Lord we still have much to learn, for the great question is not: "Are you on my side? " but "Am I on God's side? " God's truth will prevail. His purposes will be carried out, and even though we might be on the side of the most powerful and in- fluential of men, we will surely be driven to defeat if we are not in harmony with God's Word and will. Should we not all fall on our faces with Joshua, then, and ask: "What saith my Lord unto His servant? " Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas I didn't know that having a grandson could be so nerve wrecking and anxious moments when they get hurt. Little Wyatt was at the water park in Hornady park and while doing something he was told not to do, which was running, he fell and busted his mouth. The next day we decided to take him to a pediatric dentist in Jasper and found out that he was going to be okay. Two days later he tumbles face first in- to our dining room floor with a worse look- ing mouth than the first time. We took him again to the same dentist and this time he had to clean up his mouth to find that he will be okay and that it isn't unusual for a child to do this a couple of times in a short time. Hope the dentist is right and he has this out of his system. At least he is like his papaw and leads with his face (haha). We took a trip to the Cannelburg/Mont- gomery area to buy some fresh produce that we have trouble finding locally. Biggest blackberries I have ever seen and they made a delicious cobbler. If you have never tast- ed fried green beans you are missing out on a treat although they are probably not that good for you, because they are fried in the grease from a pound of bacon. The di- rections for this treat is available and if you see my wife out and about you can ask her about her way of cooking them. A fter helping with the food truck Thurs- day I took my chainsaw to Wagler's small engines and was able to order a new bearing and sprocket for it. It was back in working order Saturday in time for the storm clean up from Sunday morning's storm. I keep a steadily growing stack of weiner roasting wood. I'll have some free firewood soon as we have three trees that have to come down and I don't use wood anymore for heat. I'll let you all know when it is available if you want some. Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin Minutes with the Bible by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam Continued on page 2 See R AMBLINGS on 3 The problems in America didn't just hap- pen. They are the result of years of drifting away from the values and family traditions that gave our people the will to do that which is right. Today in America, there is a teach- ing that promotes irresponsibility. President Trump is trying to change this trend. Words like virtue and honor have become archaic in American language. These words have been replaced by smart and cool. Of- ten I hear people talk about the smart thing to do, but seldom hear them speak of the right thing to do. In business, we hear a lot about tricks and techniques. The criminals are taught to believe they are not responsi- ble for their crimes. The lazy are told they are not responsible for their poverty. The educators are not responsible for the grad- uates who can't read and politicians won't take responsibility for bad laws. In the church, the Bible is neglected and no one takes blame for the empty pews. I have a belief that many of these prob- lems started when we eliminated words like conscience, concern, and guilt. When society no longer cares and feels for oth- ers, it begins to fall apart. Our only hope is a return to faith in God, the Ten Command- ments and a willingness to take responsibil- ity for our own acts. There will be food and fellowship imme- diately after the concert. The public is invited. The storm also affected the power in the Velpen area and we had a short service in the dark. It doesn't have to be light to bring God's word as a matter of a fact it was real- ly enjoyable being able to do something dif- ferent. We talked about being un-done and being affected by seeing and hearing the things going on around us. Unless you pre- pare yourself with daily prayer to help keep yourself from conforming to the world's ways you could possibly become compla- cent with your life and weaken your faith. We also spoke about not being able to live anyone else's life for them and that we are only responsible for what and how we do RIVER OF LIFE 342 E. CR 300 N.
