Poplar Street, Petersburg Following is a review of Pike Central High School sports high- lights during the last six months of the 2017-18 school year. JANUARY • Pike Central High School se- nior Bryant Nalley became the third boys' basketball player in school history to score 1,000 ca- reer points during the Chargers' 63-50 loss at Wood Memorial on Jan. 5. Needing 12 points to reach the 1,000 -point plateau, Nalley scored a game-high 25 points to finish the night with 1,013 career points. Nalley joined Adam Seitz (1,943 points) and Gabe Elliott (1,138 points) in the program's 1,000 -point club. • Seniors Dylan Jones and Jake Sisk and freshman Lane Miller all went 5 -0 as the Pike Central High School wrestling team placed first in the Forest Park Invitational on Jan. 6. Jones recorded two wins by pin, one win by an 8 -1 decision and two wins by forfeit while com- peting at 126 pounds. Sisk record- ed three wins by pin and two wins by forfeit while competing at 220 pounds. Miller recorded one win by pin, one win by a 17-12 deci- sion and three wins by forfeit while competing at 120 pounds. • Seniors Quin Bailey and Brittany Young and junior Na- talie Bohnert won two individual events each as the Pike Central High School girls' swimming and diving team finished first in all 12 events to defeat visiting Vincennes Lincoln 148 -18 on Jan. 10. Bailey placed first i the 200 -yard freestyle with a time of 2:25.33. She was also first in the 500 -yard freestyle with a personal record time of 6:22.62. Young placed first in the 200 -yard individual medley with a person- al record time of 2:43.86. She was also first in the 100 -yard butter- fly with a time of 1:17.85. Bohnert placed first in the 50 -yard free- style with a time of 26.34 seconds. She was also first in the 100 -yard breaststroke with a time of 1:17.31, less than one second off the school record time of 1:16.50 set by Mis- sy Barnes in 1984. • Senior Silas Goff placed first in the 285 -pound weight class for the second straight year during the Pocket Athletic Conference Tournament held Jan. 20 at Heri- tage Hills. Goff, after opening the tournament with a win by forfeit, won three straight bouts by deci- sion, including one over Heritage Hills' Aidian Rea for the champi- onship. • A lay-up by senior Erika Hen- drixson with four seconds left in overtime lifted the Pike Cen- tral High School girls' basketball team to a 39 -37 victory over visit- ing Barr-Reeve on Jan. 20. The win ended a three-game losing streak by the Lady Chargers – who im- proved to 8 -8 – while Barr-Reeve fell to 4-14 with its fourth straight defeat. Hendrixson led Pike Cen- tral with 10 points, while seniors Demi Croak – who dished out four assists – and Brook Nalley added nine points each. • The Pike Central High School boys' swimming and diving team's string of six consecutive confer- ence titles came to an end with a second-place finish in the Pock- et Athletic Conference Champi- onship on Jan. 20 at Tecumseh. The Chargers, who placed first in four events, scored a total of 282 points, while Heritage Hills, which placed first in seven events, scored a total of 347 points to win its first PAC title since 2007. Pike Cen- tral senior Jacob Bohnert placed first in the 100 -yard butterfly with a time of 56.01 seconds to break the school record of 57.49 seconds set by Chaney McKinney in 2015. In 2011, Bohnert's older brother, Brandon, had set the school record of 58.98 seconds that was broken by McKinney four years later. • Senior Breyton Booker scored 26 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out five assists to lead the Pike Central High School boys' basketball team to a 72-32 victory over visiting North Knox on Jan. 22. Booker scored 18 of his points in the second half – hitting eight of 11 field goal attempts and going 2-for-3 from the free throw line – as the Chargers outscored the War- riors 44-14 to turn a 10 -point half- time lead into a 40 -point win. • Seniors Cameron Henson Lady Chargers to host 2018 Summer Spike Saturday The Pike Central High School volleyball team will host Summer Spike 2018 on Saturday, July 21, in the Pike Central Middle School gymnasium. The round-robin tournament will feature Pike Central, Washing- ton, Owen Valley and South Knox. Following is the schedule for Summer Spike 2018: 9 a.m. – Washington vs. South Knox 10 a.m. – Pike Central vs. Ow- en Valley 11 a.m. – South Knox vs. Owen Valley Noon – Pike Central vs. Wash- ington 1 p.m. – Washington vs. Owen Valley 2 p.m. – Pike Central vs. South Knox The admission charge will be $5 for an all-day pass. Concessions will be available.
