Tor- mohlen came off the bench to hit four of five field goal attempts – including two three-pointers in three tries – and was 3-for-3 from the free throw line to score 13 points, while Henson hit four of seven shots from be- yond the three-point arc to add 12 more points as the Chargers built up a 36 -15 halftime lead. Henson end- ed up with 16 points while Tormohlen finished the con- test wth 15 points. • Seniors Silas Goff, Dylan Jones and Jake Sisk placed first in their respec- tive weight classes as the Pike Central High School wrestling team placed fourth in the sectional tour- nament hosted by South- ridge at Huntingburg Me- morial Gym on Jan. 27. Goff, competing in the 285 -pound weight class, earned his first-ever sectional title with a win by a 4-3 decision over Southridge junior Wy- att Kramer in the champion- ship match that went to the ultimate tiebreaker. Jones, competing in the 126 -pound weight class, won by pin – in 1:24 – over New Albany freshman Jordan Roberson in the championship match to win his first-ever sectional title. Sisk, competing in the 220 -pound weight class, won his first-ever sectional title with a win by pin – in 2:45 – over Southridge senior Mitchell Carter. Four oth- er Chargers – senior Gavin Boyd, junior Randy Powell, sophomore Dalton Williams and freshman Lane Miller – also qualified to advance to the regional meet. • A three-pointer by se- nior Demi Croak erased a one-point deficit with just under one minute remain- ing as the Pike Central High School girls' basket- ball team rallied for a 40 - 36 victory over Washing- ton in the opening round of the sectional tournament at Princeton on Jan. 30. The postseason win was the first by the Lady Chargers since a 55 -46 victory – also against Washington – in the opening round of the sectional tour- nament at Jasper in 2009, ending a stretch of nine straight postseason losses. FEBRUARY • The Pike Central High School girls' basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 56 -52 loss to Princeton in the semifi- nals of the sectional tourna- ment hosted by the Lady Ti- gers on Feb. 2. Senior Erika Hendrixson scored a team- high 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while senior Demi Croak added 11 points as the Lady Chargers ended with a won-loss record of 11- 11 – their first non-losing re- cord since the 2009 -10 sea- son, when Pike Central also went 11-11. • Pike Central High School junior Natalie Bohnert earned a trip to the state swim meet for the third straight year after placing first in the 200 -yard individ- ual medley and the 100 -yard breaststroke – while shatter- ing her own school records in both events – during the sectional finals at Jasper on Feb. 3. Bohnert's win- ning time of 2:12.82 in the 200 -yard individual medley broke her own school record of 2:14.39. In the 100 -yard breaststroke, Bohnert's win- ning time of 58.28 seconds broke her own school record of 59.04 seconds. • Pike Central High School seniors Silas Goff and Jake Sisk placed first in the 285 -pound and 220 -pound weight class- es, respectively, and senior Dylan Jones placed second in the 126 -pound weight class during the regional tournament held at Bloom- ington South on Feb. 3, to advance to the semi-state tournament. • In the girls' diving re- gional competition held at Bloomington North on Feb. 6, Pike Central High School freshman Jenna Meyer placed 16th out of 20 com- petitors with an eight-dive score of 210.55 points, while Lady Charger junior Hallee Stephens – making her sec- ond appearance in three years at the regional com- petition – placed 18th with an eight-dive score of 205.05 points. As a freshman in 2016, Stephens placed 14th with an eight-dive score of 219.40 points. • Pike Central High School senior Kyson West- ern will continue to play soc- cer after signing a national letter of intent on Feb. 9 to attend Kentucky Wesley- an College in Owensboro, Ky. Western was named the Pocket Athletic Conference Player of the Year n 2017 after scoring a total of 32 goals – falling one short of the school record of 33 goals set by Colton White in 2016 – and dishing out 22 assists as the Chargers went 15 -3- 1, including a perfect 7-0 in the PAC to win their first-ev- er conference title. During his four-year high school ca- reer, Western scored a total of 87 goals – ranking second all-time in the PAC behind Gibson Southern's Hunter DeWeese, who scored 101 goals – while setting PAC career records for most as- sists (76) and points (250). • Pike Central High School junior Natalie Bohnert placed 25th out of 32 competitors during pre- liminaries in the 100 -yard backstroke during the 2018 IHSA A Girls' Swimming/ Diving Championship at the Indiana University Natatori- SPORTS BRIEFS Pike County Youth football sign-up dates set The Pike County Youth Football program will be having sign ups for third through sixth graders on Wednesday, July 18, Monday, July 23, and Wednesday, July 25, in front of the Pike Cen- tral Middle School Office from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The registration fee is $ 55 per player. Entries sought for Southern Indiana Wiffleball Classic The Southern Indiana Wiffleball Classic at the Zoar Mosquito Fest will be Friday, Aug. 3, and Sat- urday, Aug. 4. Divisions are Youth (11 or younger on Janu- ary 1, 2018), Junior (15 or younger on January 1, 2018), and Adult. Young- er players may play in the older divisions, but no old- er players may play in the younger divisions. The tournament is dou- ble elimination. Games will begin on Friday eve- ning and continue on Sat- urday. The entry fee is $75 per team for each of the di- visions. Entries must be submitted by July 31. 7th Annual Heartland Half Marathon registration open The 7th Annual Heart- land Half Marathon is scheduled for Labor Day weekend on Satur- day, Sept. 1. The event will once again include a half marathon, a 5K, and a team challenge. Cash prizes will be given to the top three male and female half marathon finishers. First place will receive $ 500, second place $250, and third place $100. The races will begin 7:30 a.m., Eastern time, in the shadow of the Jasper Train Depot along the Pa- toka River and will finish in the shade at Dave Bue- hler Plaza, just a stone's throw away from the start- ing line. The hilly, scenic course takes runners through commercial and resi- dential areas with chal- lenging peaks midway through the route. A f- ter the midway point, the course largely flattens out through to the finish. The 5K starts and ends in the same location as the half marathon, but splits to take a different course very close to the start of the race. The team challenge is a relay comprised of a four-person team and fol- lows the same course as the half marathon. The first team member will travel 3.8 miles, then pass along his/her timing chip to the second member. The second member will cover 4.05 miles, the third member 2.5 miles, and the final member 2.75 miles. The registration fee for the half marathon is $ 60 if registered before Au- gust 13, when the fee will increase to $70. The reg- istration fee for the 5K is $25. The registration fee for the team challenge is $25 per person/$100 per team. Pre-registrants will re- ceive a technical shirt, and the first 500 half mar- athon registrants will re- ceive a special gift. A free training group will meet every Sunday at 7 a.m. Eastern time, at Downtown Running and Fitness located at 331 Mill Street. This training group is open to the public and participants are free to run/walk at their own pace. The Heartland Half Marathon, 5K, and Team Challenge are being co- ordinated by DC MultiS - port, a non-profit organi- zation dedicated to pro- moting health and well- ness while giving back to local communities. Lodging information is being coordinated by the Dubois County Visi- tors Center and race-day event volunteers are being coordinated by Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center, the event's corpo- rate sponsor. The majority of the proceeds from this year's race will be given to the Phillip R. Dawkins Heart & Vascular Center at Me- morial Hospital to be uti- lized for new integrative medicine services pro- vided to cardiac patients. Ten percent of the pro- ceeds will go toward the DC MultiSport Endow- ment to ensure future sta- bility of the organization and to continue in its ef- forts to give toward wor- thy causes.
