In addition, Bohnert placed 29th in the 200 -yard indi- vidual medley with a time of 2:13.70. • Pike Central High School senior wrestler Jake Sisk placed fourth in the 220 -pound weight division during the IHSA A Semi- State Championships at the Ford Center in Evansville on Feb. 10, becoming the first Charger to advance to the state meet since Cody Ken- dall accomplished the feat – as a junior – in 2010. • Pike Central High School senior Erika Hen- drixson was named to the Pocket Athletic Con- ference's All-Conference Team in girls' basketball for the second straight year. During the 2017-18 season, Hendrixson averaged 15.0 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game in 20 games. In eight games against PAC opponents, Hendrixson av- eraged 16.5 points, 8.0 re- bounds and 2.5 steals per game. Pike Central senior guards Demi Croak and Brook Nalley received hon- orable mention. • Pike Central High School senior Jake Sisk's first-ever appearance in the state wrestling meet at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Feb. 16 ended with a loss by pin in 1:27 to Lawrence- burg senior Mason Parris in the opening round of the 220 -pound weight division. Parris, who had signed to wrestle at the University of Michigan, would post three more wins by pin to win his third straight state title in the 220 -pound weight divi- sion while improving to 47- 0. The four wins by pin gave Parris 11 for his four-year high school career at the state finals, breaking the re- cord of 10 set by Ray Fran- kowski from 1936 -38. • Pike Central High School senior Jacob Bohnert shattered the school record to place first in the 200 -yard freestyle during the IHSA A Boys' Swimming and Diving Sectional Championship at Jasper on Feb. 17. Bohnert won the 200 -yard free- style with a time of 1:47.08 to break the school record time of 1:51.19 set by Lukas Hill during the 2016 -17 sea- son. Bohnert also teamed up with Hill, senior Ty Cassitty and sophomore Jersey Mills to place first in the 200 -yard freestyle relay with a school record time of 1:31.76, best- ing the previous school re- cord time of 1:32.33 set by Bohnert, Hill, Aaron Keep- es and Chaney McKinney during the sectional finals in 2015. • Former Pike Central High School Lady Char- ger standout Tricia Deffen- doll had her No. 12 jersey retired during a ceremony held at halftime of the Pike Central-Jasper boys' basket- ball game on Feb. 17. Deffen- doll, who graduated from Pike Central in 1991 after leading the Lady Chargers to two sectional and region- al championships in 1989 -90 and 1990 -91 seasons, is the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,621 points and still holds the school records for most points in a season (505), most assists in a sea- son (143), most assists in a career (399) and career free throw percentage (76.5 per- cent). Deffendoll was named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame's Silver Anni- versary Girls' Team in 2016. • Four members of the Pike Central High School boys' swimming and div- ing team competed in two events during preliminar- ies for the Indiana High School Athletic Associa- tion's state meet on Feb. 23 at the Indiana Universi- ty Natatorium in Indianap- olis. Senior Jacob Bohnert placed 30th out of 32 com- petitors in the 200 -yard free- style with a time of 1:48.40. Bohnert also teamed up with seniors Ty Cassitty and Lu- kas Hill to place 30th in the 200 -yard freestyle with a time of 1:33.14. • The Pike Central High School boys' basketball team saw its bid for a third consec- utive sectional title come to a disappointing end with a 42-33 loss to Sullivan in the opening round of the Class 3A Southridge Section- al at Huntingburg Memo- rial Gym on Feb. 27. Trail- ing 30 -28 at the end of three quarters, Sullivan was a per- fect 14-for-14 from the free throw line – and 16 -for-16 for the game – while outscoring the Chargers 14-3 in the fi- nal period. MARCH • Pike Central High School senior Bryant Nal- ley was named to the Pock- et Athletic Conference's All-Conference Team for boys' basketball for the sec- ond straight year. Nalley, a 6 -foot-5 forward, averaged 19.1 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists during 23 games. In eight PAC con- tests, Nalley averaged 16.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists. Nalley end- ed his high school career with 1,260 points – the sec- ond-most in school history – and 492 rebounds. In addi- tion, Chargers senior Brey- ton Booker received honor- able mention. • Pike Central High School senior Breyton Book- er was selected for first- team Academic All-State honors for 2018 by the Indi- ana Basketball Coaches As- sociation. A total of 75 Indi- ana high school seniors – 36 boys and 39 girls – were cho- sen as first-team Academic All-State, while 181 more boys and 174 more girls were recognized as hon- orable mention Academic All-State. Booker, a 6 -foot-2 guard, averaged 11.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists during 22 regular-season games. • Senior third baseman Jalah Barnes belted three hits – including two doubles – and drove in three runs as the Pike Central High School softball team posted a 16 -0 season-opening victo- ry over visiting Barr-Reeve on March 22. Senior first baseman Demi Croak had two hits, including a three- run bases-loaded double in the second inning, while ju- nior second baseman Em- ily Carnahan went 2-for-5 and drove in three runs. Se- nior pitcher Peyton Sorgi- us hurled four scoreless in- nings to get the win, allow- ing two hits while striking out three. • The third out proved to be elusive when the Pike Central High School base- ball team opened its season with a 12-1 loss at Washing- ton on March 30. Ten of the Hatchets' runs were scored with two outs, including every one in an eight-run fourth inning during which 11 straight batters reached bases – six on walks, three on errors, one as a hit batter, and one with a hit. APRIL • The Pike Central High School girls' tennis team opened its season with a 3- 2 victory over visiting Te- cumseh on April 2. Senior Cass Conder and sophomore Shelby Vaughn won at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respec- tively. In addition, the team of junior Kirsten Jansen and sophomore Audrey Keepes won at No. 1 doubles. • Freshman Libby Stone won two individual events as the Pike Central High School girls' track and field team opened its season by placing first in a three-team meet hosted by Tecumseh on April 2. Stone placed first in the 100 -meter dash with a time of 14.33 seconds, and first in long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 7 inches. Stone also teamed up with senior Halley Powers, soph- omore Lily Willis and fresh- man Jenna Meyer to place first in the 1,600 -meter re- lay with a time of 4:42. • Sophomore Nate Wool- ery won two individual events as the Pike Central High School boys' track and field team opened its season by finishing first in a three-team meet host- ed by Tecumseh on April 2. Woolery placed first in the 800 -meter run with a per- sonal-best time of 2:14, and first in the 3,200 -meter run with a time of 11:21.
