The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, July 4, 2018 C-1 CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg Have you ever heard some preacher say: "There are many things in the Bible which are hard to understand but, thank God, the plan of salvation is as simple as can be." Well the plan of salvation is simple IF we obey II Timothy 2:15, "rightly divid- ing the Word of truth." Otherwise it is far from simple. The Apostle Paul wrote: "We conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law" (Rom. 3:28). Yet James wrote: "By works a man is justified, and not by faith only" ( James 2:24). Again, at Sinai, God said to Israel through Moses: "If ye will obey My voice indeed, and keep My covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto Me above all people …" (Ex. 19:5). But our Lord said, as He sent His apostles to wit- ness for Him that, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved… and these signs shall follow them that believe: in My name shall they cast out demons, they shall speak with new tongues…" etc. (Mark 16:16 -18). Thus, according to their "great commission" water baptism was re- quired for salvation and miraculous signs were the evidences of salvation. Confusing? Contradictory? Not if we "rightly divide the Word of truth." It was after "the law was given by Moses," after our Lord's earthly ministry, after the com- mission to the twelve, that God raised up another apostle, Paul, and sent him forth with "the gospel of the grace of God" (Acts 20 :24). It was Paul who was sent to declare: "But NOW, the righteousness of God without the law is manifested…" (Rom. 3:21). "To him that worketh not, but be- lieveth on Him that justifieth the ungod- ly, his faith is counted for righteousness" (Rom. 4:5). "Therefore, being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom. 5:1). It sure has been a scorcher this past week and it was even hot in Branson Missouri as we took a mini vacation for four days. The heat coupled with trying to cram about five days worth of attractions into three days made for a tired bunch of travelers. It was good to get away from the daily routine but when we got back we had a jun- gle of a yard to mow. At one of the shows we got to see I was fortunate enough to meet and talk to Lulu Roman of the old Hee Haw show. She is very friendly and easy to talk to. I shared with her that I have been nick- named Lulu for years and that we shared the same nickname. She reflected on the Hee Haw show and said she believes she and Roy Clark are the only ones from the show who are still alive. Too bad they don't have family friendly shows and wholesome entertainment today like Hee Haw. We stayed at the Baymont Inn and real- ly enjoyed our stay there. The workers are extremely friendly and go out of their way to make your stay pleasant. We were on the first floor and couldn't even tell there was a storm going on outside during the night. It must have been one of the storms that held together and hit Petersburg the next morning. They had several trees down but it didn't take them long to get it cleaned up. Stam Continued on page 2 It is important to remind ourselves that freedom of religion cannot be taken for granted. It requires constant attention. Sad- ly, Americans do not understand separation of church and state. Most think the state- ment has something to do with our Consti- tution. The ACLU and elite media express- es these words written in a letter express- ing the personal opinion of one man. They repeat it so often, without telling the origin of the statement, that some actually think it has something to do with the Constitution. We must constantly affirm the distortion of this single statement or else people believe it. Even this man's opinion does not mean we should separate religion from public life. Religion and moral convictions are not an alien or threatening force in public life. The great majority of educated Americans know morality has its roots in the Christian reli- gion. Throughout history there have been those who hate the values taught by Chris- tianity. We are all created in the image of God and are accountable to Him. Every effort should be made in government and soci- ety in general to cul- tivate the principles taught by the Ten Commandments. Honesty, integrity, compassion, charity, respect and marriage are values that have made America great. The elite media and many political leaders seek to destroy all that made America great. We must reject the idea that tolerance su- persedes the moral law of God. As we cele- brate our Independence Day, let us review our heritage and protect our nation from the evil forces of liberalism. One thing about going to Branson is it is ex- pensive so be prepared and save up a little before going there. There is lots to do and it would take a month or so to see it all. Sunday's sermon covered examining our- selves daily to make sure we haven't allowed the fleshly part of us drag more world into our lives than we can allow. The more world- ly we let in, the more of the Spiritual side we crowd out. Live your life as you say you do and don't proclaim something that you aren't. God works with us to help keep us in check if we will only listen to Him. You can hear God by watching others and listening to their witness. Of course the ultimate way God speaks to us is through the scripture and if you don't spend time reading God's word you can't hear Him there. Our lesson covered working toward per- fection because until God takes us home we will not ever attain the perfect life only a for- given life. It is another part of our life that requires practice. Well enough arm-chair preaching so go out and be a blessing and be blessed. Hamline Chapel Sunday, July 15 • 1:30pm Woolsey Band Homecoming 188 th SPEAKER: Dist. Supt.
