Brough, 18, of 324 Ohio St., and Charles Baughn, 35, of 503 W. Third St. Simmons was traveling south on SR 61 at approxi- mately 12:45 a.m. this past Thursday, to assist a state trooper with a traffic stop near PC-1 Stop, when he ob- served a gold Oldsmobile cross the centerline three times while swerving all over its lane. A fter initiating a stop, the driver was identified as Alexis Brough, who stat- ed she had left her glasses at home and that was the reason for her driving be- havior. According to the re- port, Simmons noticed that both the driver and her pas- senger, Charles Baughn, were extremely nervous, with shaky voices, as well as hands. When Simmons asked her where she was going, Brough stated she was go- ing to her grandmother's in Winslow to visit. When Sheriff's Deputy Buck Seger arrived with K9 Bleck, both occupants were out of the vehicle and Bleck then ran a free air sniff around the vehicle. Bleck indicated on both the driver's and passen- ger's side of the vehicle. When Simmons asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, Baughn said there was a possibility that some marijuana might have been there belonging to the owner of the Oldsmobile in question. During the search of the vehicle, a brand new glass smoking device was found between the center con- sole and passenger seat, ac- cording to the report. Later in the search, a yellow pill bottle with the label par- tially scraped off was found in the glove box. Inside the pill bottle was a clear plastic baggie containing a crystal- like substance that field test- ed positive for methamphet- amine and weighed approx- imately 8.8 grams. In the bottom of the bottle were 15 Clonazepam pills, which are a schedule 4 controlled sub- stance. Both occupants were placed in handcuffs, read their Miranda Warnings and immediately separat- ed. State Trooper Boeck- man arrived and stayed with Brough, and Deputy Seger stood with Baughn while Simmons finished his search. When speaking with Brough, she informed Sim- mons she was going to ex- ercise her right to not talk. When Simmons asked Baughn about what was found in the car, he denied knowing anything about what had been found. He stated to officers he was working with the DEA to try and help them get some people. According to the re- port, Brough and Baughn were taking the metham- phetamine to go meet with some people to smoke it with them and try to get them to get some more metham- phetamine. Baughn add- ed that he couldn't go and meet with these people and not have anything for them to smoke. The two were transport- ed to the Pike County Jail, where a crystal like-sub- stance that tested posi- tive for methamphetamine was found in a $20 bill be- longing to Baughn. Baughn was charged with dealing in methamphetamine, pos- session, maintaining a com- mon nuisance, possession of a controlled substance and trafficking with an inmate. Brough was charged with dealing in methamphet- amine, possession of meth- amphetamine, maintaining a common nuisance and pos- session of a controlled sub- stance. Three arrested on drunken driving charges last week By Andy Heuring Three people were arrest- ed for drunken driving in Pike County last week. A St. Meinrad man was arrested after police were called to check on a suspi- cious person in the backyard of a Velpen resident at 12:46 a.m. on Saturday, June 30. Joseph A. Schaefer, 30, of 19636 N. Fifth St., St. Mein- rad, was arrested by Pike County Sheriff's Sgt. Dal- las Killian. Killian said he and Deputy Buck Seger ar- rived at the residence and searched some of the build- ings at the location, and as they were finishing their search, they noticed a ve- hicle leaving the area. Sgt. Killian said he saw a car turn around and drive back toward the same property it had just left. He followed it and saw it make a turn onto Third St. without signaling. He stopped the vehicle, which was driven by Schae- fer. When Killian asked for his license, Schaefer said his license was suspended and he gave police an Indiana identification card. Schaefer failed field sobri- ety tests. Sgt. Killian's re- port stated when Schaefer was asked if he would take a chemical test, he asked if he tested positive for marijuana if he would be charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated. According to Killian, when Schaefer was told he would be charged, he refused the test. Schaefer was transport- ed to the Pike County Jail, where he was preliminarily charged with operating a ve- hicle while intoxicated (re- fusal). A Winslow man was ar- rested last Wednesday night after police said they saw him walk out of the Win- slow Eagles and into the front of his truck, then stum- ble around his truck to the driver's side and drive away. Richard F. Bishop, 58, of 105 North St., Winslow, was arrested just before 9 p.m. Sgt. Killian said while he was on patrol, he saw Bish- op walked out of the Eagles, stumble and drive away. Sgt. Killian followed Bishop and saw him "come to a late stop" at the intersections of Center and Lafayette sts. and then turn into his drive- way from North St. without signaling. Bishop admitted to Killian he thought Killian might have seen him walk into the truck. According to Killian's report, Bishop admitted he had too much to drink to be driving but he was only going two blocks. He failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the Pike County Jail, where he tested 0.177 percent for blood alcohol content. He was charged with op- erating a vehicle while in- toxicated. Sgt. Killian noted in his report Bishop was "cooper- ative throughout the entire process." A rural Petersburg man was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated on Monday, June 25 when police stopped him for mak- ing a turn without a turn sig- nal. Paul Shover, 50, of 401 N. Eighth St., Petersburg, was arrested by Petersburg Cpl. Kyle Mills. Cpl. Mills said he was sitting at the Church Alive parking lot when he noticed a blue passenger car pull on- to Highway 61 from White River Ave. without a turn signal. He stopped the vehicle and while talking to Shover, he said he could not under- stand Shover, whose speech was slurred and very quick. Shover told police he had a broken foot and couldn't take a field sobriety test, but failed the ones he was able to take. Cpl. Mills' report stated Shover denied taking any- thing that would intoxicate him. But while questioning Shover, he eventually admit- ted he had taken Adderall and didn't have a prescrip- tion for it. He refused a chemical test and was taken into custody on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (refusal).
