Cathleen Marie Brock, 47, of 158 Whitelock Ave., Petersburg, was arrested on charges of neglect of a dependent, a class D felony, possession of marijuana, a class A misdemeanor, maintaining a common nuisance and possession of paraphernalia. Petersburg Police Sgt. Chad McClellan said he was asked to do a welfare check on Brock and her daughter after the daughter missed school and Brock didn't attend a scheduled meeting with the school. Sgt. McClellan went to their house and talked with the daughter. While there, he found evidence of drug use in the residence. McClellan obtained a search warrant. According to McClellan's report, police found a plastic bag containing a green leafy substance that field-tested positive for marijuana, a glass smoking pipe and a bottle of unlabeled pills. VFW New Year's Party to benefit Fisher House Foundation By James Capozella The Coleman-Stewart Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3587 is offering a New Year's eve of merry making and entertainment that will benefit the Fisher House Foundation. This much needed program provides a place where the family of an ill or wounded hospitalized service member can reside near where the treatment is taking place. Tickets for the 8 p.m. VFW dance and evening of karaoke are $3 for singles and $5 for couples according to VFW Post 3587 Commander Jamie English. As was the case in the extremely successful Wounded Warrior benefit a few weeks ago, Gordon Rainey will be the Karaoke DJ. Drivers will be available at the club throughout the night for those who need a ride. Veterans and family members that utilize the housing, which is located at or near military reservations or VA medical centers, is free of all costs including food and transportation. The Fisher House Foundation Program began in 1982 when Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher, life-long supporters of the troops, founded the Zachary and Elizabeth M. Fisher Armed Services Foundation. One recent local veteran benefiting from the Fisher House in St. Louis was Donnie Wiseman and his wife Andrea. The Otwell couple utilized the facility while Donnie was in the VA hospital for several months. This enabled Andrea to be with him without extraordinary expenses for lodging, travel and meals. A monetary donation to the foundation is just one way to show support for our military and their families during a critical time of need such as injury or illness. Volunteers also play an important role in the dayto-day functions of each of the foundation's homes. Baby sitting needs, housekeeping, food delivery and associated costs and equipment are items provided by donations and volunteers. More than 160,000 mili- tary families have benefited from the foundation's housing service, saving veteran families hundreds of millions of dollars in lodging, food, transportation and other related expenses. More than 96 percent of donated funds are used for programs with 4 percent for administration and fund raising. Fisher House locations and descriptions can be found at the foundation web site, www.fisherhouse.org. Each home ranges from 5,000 to 16,000 square feet containing 8 to 21 suites. Almost all of the homes are within walking distance and those that aren't, the transportation is provided. The foundation accounted for four million days of lodging since the first home was opened for veteran use. There are 58 homes in the system with 5 additional under construction. The nearest homes in the tri-state are in St. Louis, Fort Campbell, Hines VA in Illinois, Cincinnati and Wright-Patterson Medical Centers I & II in Ohio. In addition to bedrooms, bathrooms and laundry facilities, each house has a well stocked kitchen and a living room with a library and toy area. Each has a manager plus volunteers available to help and assist military families during their time of need. Another function of the foundation is travel miles which has amounted to $45 million in benefits to veterans and their families flying for treatment. Fisher House Foundation also offers scholarships.
