B-2 Wednesday, December 19, 2012 The Press-Dispatch Chargers wrestlers get three wins By Mike Johansen The Christmas break can't come to soon for the Pike Central Chargers with several injuries to heal, but that did not stop them from Giving Tell City and several teams in the Evansville North Invitational all they could handle this past week. The Chargers have a break until they face the Vincennes Lincoln Alices in a dual meet in Vincennes on Wednesday, Jan. 2, the first day back from an almost two week break. They will be in the Forest Park Invitational dual meet tournament Jan. 5. The Chargers were at home last Tuesday, Dec. 11, to face the Tell City Marksmen and came close to a dual meet home win, but fell one match short. Tell City prevailed 42-39 winning it with a last match pin. Pike Central gave up forfeits and six points at 112 and 220. The results from that meet, Pike Central wrestlers listed first, were: 106—Caleb Hawkins was pinned by Aubrey Craig; 120—Cody Whitehead was pinned by Travis Brinksreader; 126—Nick Baker dec. Scouting Report By Mike Johansen The Pike Central Lady Chargers will be in Vincennes at Rivet High School Thursday and host Springs Valley on Friday to complete the before Christmas boys schedule while the Lady Chargers are getting ready for the Vincennes Rivet Tournament Dec. 27 and 28. BOYS BASKETBALL—The Charger boys teams have a double header on Thursday and Friday, one road game and one home game. Thursday night the Chargers take on the Vincennes Rivet Patriots in a road game at Rivet High School in Vincennes with the JV game at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30. The Patriots are coached by Adam Ballard, who is 6-23 in his second season as the coach. They have wins over North Knox and Washington Catholic this year and stand at 2-5 overall. They beat the Chargers 51-47 last season. Key players for the Patriots include: Collin Vieke, 6-0, 12; Collin Wirth, 6-2, 11; Zach Templin, 6-4, 11; Nick Niehaus, 5-11, 11; John Anderson, 6-3, 10; Peyton Cummings, 6-1, 10; Alex Halter, 5-11, 11; Tanner Thomas, 5-10, 9; Tyler Mayles, 6-0, 11. The second game is Friday night in the Chargers gym with the JV game tipping off at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30. This is the first year to meet Springs Valley for the Chargers. They are 3-2 on the season and were 5-16 last year. Coach Jim Jones is in his first year at the school and is 682-382 overall in 46 years of coaching. No information was available on their key players. WRESTLING—The Pike Central Chargers are on Christmas Break and they resume Jan. 2 with a dual meet at Vincennes Lincoln beginning at 6 p.m. They are at Forest Park for an invitational on Saturday, Jan. 5. BOYS-GIRLS SWIMMING—The Charger boys and girls swimming teams next meet is Monday, Jan. 7, against Northeast Dubois and Gibson Southern in the Pike Central pool. The Chargers were in the Evansville North Invitational on Saturday and wrestled five other teams in a dual meet situation and winning three of the matches. Pike Central forfeited all weight classes not mentioned in each result, usually two or three weight classes. The Chargers lost to Evansville North 27-45 in the opening match. Wornica starts at GC By Mike Johansen Tara Wornica has landed in the starting lineup of the Georgia College Lady Bobcats as they start their march through the women's basketball season and the Peach Belt Conference. Wornica is a transfer from Olney College in Illinois to Georgia College State University in Milledgeville, Ga., and a graduate of Pike Central High School. Wornica set a single game scoring record at Olney with 41 points in an early season game. She put in 41 points against the Greenville College JV in the fourth game of the season. She lead her Olney team with 19 free throws attempted in one game, another school record. She had 348 attempts from the free throw line this season making 79 percent of her shots or 275 free throws to lead the team and set new school records for both. She made 81 percent her sophomore season. She is ranked 42nd in the NJCAA National list in free throws. Wornica was named first team all conference for the GRAC and totaled 851 points in her two years. She was a starting guard for three seasons at Pike Central under Coach Shawn Bruner and an all-PAC player her senior season. She lettered in basketball, track, golf and soccer at PCHS. Tara Wornica She is the daughter of Terry and Tricia Wornica of Petersburg. Georgia College is located in Milledgeville and was 4-22 last season. They are an NCAA Division II college program playing in the Peach Belt Conference. The team has a 4-3 record this season and is 2-0 in the conference. She has started all seven games for the Lady Bobcats scoring 6.6 points per game. She had 10 points versus Florida Western and 13 points in a game with West Georgia. She also has eight assists, two steals, 19 rebounds and a total of 46 points. She makes 65 percent of her free throws and shoots 50 percent from the field.
