They continued work- ing through the hits and try- ing new things." The Lady Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the first set on an ace serve by junior Becca Crow before Heritage Hills scored six of the next sev- en points – including three on kills by Wahl – to surge ahead 6 -2. Pike Central would rally, however, scoring six of the next eight points – including one on an ace serve by se- nior Brook Nalley and two on kills by juniors Kylie Dawson and Alyssa Jenkins – to pull even at 8 -8. But a kill by Bell sparked a 12-1 scoring run by the Lady Patriots that featured three more kills by Bell as Her- itage Hills jumped out to a 20 -9 lead. A fter the Lady Char- gers scored back-to-back points to close to within 20 - 11, Heritage Hills scored five straight points to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five match. In the second set, a kill by junior Taylor Lamey and an ace serve by Crow gave Pike Central a 2-0 lead before the Lady Patriots answered with five straight points – includ- ing three on kills by Wahl, Wetzel and senior Kasey Schaeffer – to take a 5 -2 lead. Back-to-back kills by Lamey and Crow cut the defi- cit to 5 -4, but Heritage Hills answered by scoring 17 of the next 20 points to extend its lead to 22-7 and cruised to the second-set win. At the start of the third set, Pike Central scored the first three points – including two on a kill and a block by Nalley – and held a 4-1 lead before the Lady Patriots rolled off six straight points to surge ahead 7-4. A fter back-to-back points by the Lady Chargers – in- cluding one on a dink by Ky- lie Dawson – pulled them to within 7-6, four kills by Bell sparked a 12-1 scoring run that extended Heritage Hills' lead to 19 -7. The Lady Patriots ended the match with a 6 -3 scoring run that featured three more kills by Bell. "They got a little frustrat- ed a few times, so I asked them if they felt that they were in the right defensive position," Walton said. "They replied with a quick 'yes,' so I tried to get them to under- stand that Heritage Hills is really good offensively, and it's okay that they missed a few hits. We had 42 digs on them, so we were getting to a lot of the hits." For the match, Pike Cen- tral recorded just eight kills – four by Nalley, two by Jen- kins and one each by Kylie Dawson and Lamey. "Because we played a tough defensive game, it felt like our offense didn't get as much of a chance to hit, which shows in our low num- ber of kills," Walton said. "We played a great match against an undefeated con- ference team and I am proud LOSS Continued from page 1 Lady Chargers drop three- set loss at Gibson Southern The Pike Central High School volleyball team fell to 9 -18 overall – and 2-5 in the Pocket Athletic Confer- ence – with a 25 -22, 25 -13, 25 -13 loss at Gibson South- ern on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
