The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, October 11, 2017 B- 3 29th with a personal course record time of 24:37, besting her previous course record time of 25:49 by 72 seconds. Powers, Furman, Young and Meyer will be among the top 10 individuals from the sectional's non-qualify- ing teams who will compete in Saturday's regional meet. In addition, Lady Charger junior Erin Craig placed 44th with a time of 26:02; junior Lillie Pancake placed 46th with a time of 26:39; and se- nior Brittany Young placed 47th with a time of 26:41. As a team, Pike Central scored 120 points, placing sixth behind Barr-Reeve (36 points), South Knox (77), North Daviess (92), and Vin- cennes Lincoln and Gibson Southern (tied at 96). Only the top five teams advance to the regional meet. Tecumseh was seventh with 185 points, followed by North Knox (196). Princ- eton, Vincennes Rivet and Washington also participat- ed but did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score. "It's a little bittersweet," Pike Central head coach Ja- son Roach said. "You're re- ally disappointed that you didn't get the team to go. That was the goal. We really wanted it to happen." "But, you know, there's four girls going, so we're very excited for those four," Roach added. "We know those four are going to come in and work hard this week and, hopefully, as individu- als, be able to take the next step or so, however many we can get there." Powers, who ran a time of 25:07 on the same course during the South Knox Invi- tational on Saturday, Sept. 16, said afterward that her goal was to qualify to ad- vance to the regional meet. "Coming into today, I was kind of struggling because of some things that I had to overcome," said Powers, who will be competing in her third straight regional meet. "But God got me through it. I just had Him on my heart and He got me through it." "She's a very religious girl and I know she sat down and she prayed, and I think she just got her mind right and told herself that these are just obstacles to overcome," Roach said. "That's the ap- proach to take, that if you're able to overcome these ob- stacles, then you're able to overcome everything out there. Obstacles are just put there to see how bad you want it, and I never ques- tioned how bad she want- ed it." was tackled for an eight-yard loss, forcing the Chargers to punt. Junior running back Tuck- er Schank fielded Boger's punt at his own 49 -yard line and returned it 19 yards to Pike Central's 32-yard line. Four plays later, Schank scored on a seven-yard run – and Dubon kicked the ex- tra-point – to extend South- ridge's lead to 14-0 with 4:13 remaining in the first peri- od. Three plays later, Schank – playing safety – intercept- ed a pass by Alvey and re- turned it to the Chargers' 5 -yard line, setting up a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Cole Calvert. Dubon's point-after kick was good, stretching the Raiders' lead to 21-0 with 1:20 left in the first quarter. A fter a block-in-the-back penalty on the ensuing kick- off return backed Pike Cen- tral up to its own 9 -yard line, the Chargers picked up a first down when – on 3rd- and-5 from the 14-yard line – Alvey connected with Bo- ger on an eight-yard pass to the 22-yard line. Two plays later, however, a fumble by Alvey was recov- ered by Southridge junior safety Seth Nunamaker at the Chargers' 34-yard line with 11:05 left in the sec- ond period. The Raiders subsequent- ly put together a seven-play scoring drive – capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Calvert and the point-after kick by Dubon – to extend their lead to 28 -0 with 8:39 remaining in the first half. The Pike Central offense showed signs of life on its next possession, driving from it's own 23-yard line to the Southridge 33-yard line in six plays, including a 27-yard pass from Alvey to Boger and a 10 -yard run by Fields. Then, on 3rd-and-3, Al- vey completed a short pass to junior wide receiver Judah Leathco. Leathco, however, later- aled the ball to Boger, who then raced down the sideline and into the end zone. "We realized we needed some stuff to keep practice interesting, and too, maybe have a chance to score on some trickeration – some gadgetry, I guess you could call it," Mattingly said. "We executed it well. It was a well-run play by Alvey and Leathco and Boger." Alvey then connected with sophomore tight end Levi McCarter on the two- point conversion attempt, cutting the Raiders' lead to 28 -8 with 4:25 left in the sec- ond period. Southridge, however, wasn't quite done yet, scor- ing two plays – and 22 sec- onds – later on a 42-yard run by Schank that – follow- ing Dubon's point-after kick – extended its lead to 35 -8 with 4:03 remaining in the first half. Then, after an eight-play, 51-yard offensive drive by the Chargers stalled out at the Raiders' 29 -yard line with 44.6 seconds left in the second period, Southridge – five plays and two timeouts later – scored on a 41-yard pass from senior quarter- back Jayce Harter to Schank with 2.9 seconds remaining in the first half. Dubon's point-after kick was good, extending the Raiders' lead to 42-8. With Southridge leading 49 -8 after Harter scored on a 39 -yard run with 9:46 left in the third period, Pike Cen- tral threatened to score ear- ly in the fourth quarter. A fter Southridge turned the ball over on downs at its own 48 -yard line with 11:01 remaining, Alvey hooked up with Boger on a 24-yard pass and Fields ran for a 13-yard gain, giving the Chargers a first down at the Raiders' 11-yard line. Following a five-yard run by Alvey, however, a fumble by Fields was recovered by Southridge junior defensive lineman Devin Murphy at the Raiders' 7-yard line with 8:13 left. Southridge would then put together a nine-play, 93-yard drive that culminat- ed in an 18 -yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Jude Songer with 1:41 remaining. Fields led the Chargers in rushing with 74 yards on 15 carries, while Alvey picked up 58 yards on 13 rushing at- tempts. Alvey also complet- ed five of 10 passes for 107 yards with one interception. Boger had four pass recep- tions for 104 yards. Smith paced Southridge with 87 yards rushing on three carries while Schank picked up 82 yards on nine rushing attempts. Harter, meanwhile, completed six of nine pass attempts for 107 yards. Senior split end Grant Maxey caught three passes for 44 yards while junior run- ning back Matt Price had two catches for 22 yards. "There were some bright spots defensively," Matting- ly said. "I think where you saw the difference in the game was outside speed. When (Harter) or (Schank) got to the outside, it was dif- ficult for our guys to catch them. So, coming in, our plan was 'contain, contain, contain.' We did that for the most part. But the plays that they did get outside on us were ones we paid through the nose for." Pike Central will close out the regular season at home against North Posey (6 -2 overall, 4-2 in the PAC) on Friday, Oct. 13, before traveling one week later to Gibson Southern for a first- round sectional tournament game against the Titans. "Our guys are very con- fident versus North Posey," Mattingly said. "It's Senior Night, it's potentially the last home game that you're go- ing to play as a senior. No one ever knows how the tournament's going to go, but it's a big night for those seniors. So we're going to do everything we can to put them in a situation where they can come away with a victory." Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., Eastern time.
