Visit vegasinc.com to post your opinion. gas area home values expected to rise over the next year"): I On Eli Segall's July 24 vegasinc.com story about Zillow, a national realty research firm, reporting that Las Vegas Val- ley home values have sunk as low as they are expected to go and are poised to rise faster locally than nationally ("Las Ve- hope they are right. I would love to be able to sell my home and leave this city. It was a nice place to live when I first moved here in 1980, though. — antigov Zillow must be living in a different world than the rest of us. Does anyone really think the economy is really do- ing much better? The short sales and foreclosures have changed the appraisals of homes so much that it is incred- ibly difficult for anyone to gauge the true value of homes anymore. — jac (Jacqueline Campbell) I'll take a wait-and-see approach on this one. So many of these metrics are shortsighted and are not accurate. How many times in the past three years has some report come out claiming that we've hit bottom only to be proven wrong? — green617 On Steve Green's July 23 vegasinc.com story about com- mercial real estate vacancies remaining elevated in the Las Vegas area ("Las Vegas office rent dips to seven-year low"): O ne of the strongest indicators of our weak commercial market is that rent prices are dipping and people are not renting. With up to 25 percent commercial vacancy valley- wide, rents will probably continue to drop or at least have hit bottom. One can only hope! — Xtlman (Mark Dunton) Thank the "job creators" busily creat- ing jobs in China, Mexico and any other place that has low labor costs and few environmental and worker safety regu- lations. — 2bxx On Bruce Spotleson's July 23 VEGAS INC column about overcoming the fear of public speaking ("Overcoming the big fear: Public speaking is something people dread, but it doesn't have to be so frightening"): O ne of the most useful classes I took in college was Speech. I learned to speak in front of a group and continued in Toast- masters for two years after that. It has paid enormous dividends in my career in many different ways. LEILA NAVIDI I strongly urge anyone who needs to speak with custom- ers, managers, or make sales pitches to take this class as well as one in logic or critical thinking. — boftx On Richard N. Velotta's July 23 VEGAS INC column about Mc- Carran International Airport moving into the next phase of Terminal 3 ("Which way do you go now? Be prepared for a little confusion about where to go for airport arrivals, de- don't understand why domestic carriers are moving into Terminal 3. I thought that the whole purpose of Terminal 3 was to provide more gates for international carriers and to gain arrivals from cities we don't yet have flights from. — orca17 partures"): I A cellphone lot would eliminate much of the congestion around the passenger pick-up area. One rule should be that no limousines are allowed in the cellphone lot. — vegasbike (John Dough) On Steve Green's July 23 vegasinc.com story about what CityCenter may become after the faulty Harmon Tower is imploded ("After Harmon is imploded, what will take its place at CityCenter?"): H aving worked in contracts all my life, it's a safe bet that Harmon will be a litigious issue for many years. Perini will not go down easy. This story has many years to go. — doogie (Robert Duggan) I think a shopping district featuring food and entertain- ment would be the best use of the space and for drawing people in to CityCenter. Like it or not, Aria is a nice property. The one thing I didnt like about staying there was the long, boring walk to get anywhere else. If you were walking by a shopping district it would not be so bad. The shopping district shouldn't be any- thing like Crystals. That place missed the mark in a big way. — jaymes4u (James Higgins) Build nothing until there's a sense of stability. These guys are like kids in a candy store. "Open lot, gotta build some- thing." CityCenter is and will continue to be a financial failure. Nothing you add is going to help that. It was an ill conceived project for Las Vegas. — TomD1228 25 percent Rate of homeowners in the valley this spring who owed more than double what their houses were worth, accord- ing to Zillow. 438 New-home sales in the region in June, up 21 percent from a year earlier. 12.1 percent Unemployment rate in June in the Las Vegas area, with an estimated 119,100 jobless workers or 3,000 more than in May. 11.6 percent State unemployment rate in June, the same as in May.
