I attended University of California – Santa Barbara for undergraduate and received a B.S. in Actuarial Statistics there in 1991. I got my J.D. from the University of the Pacifi c, McGeorge School of Law in 1994. Why did you choose this/these particular areas of practice and when did you know this was what you wanted to do? My decided to stick with it. What attention? I father has been practicing law in this area for his entire career, so it was natural for me to do the same. I originally planned to go to law school, work for two years, then get my M.B.A. and go into fi nance or marketing. But I caught onto estate planning and loved what I was doing, so I are some of the things in this area of the law that have captured your fi nd the challenge of structuring a client's wealth to protect the assets from creditors ex- tremely fascinating because there is so much that can be done within the bounds of the law. I also love doing advanced estate tax reduction techniques because it is so easy to quantify the benefi ts that I am able to give my clients and their families. Briefl y, what has been the most interesting case you've been involved with? Since most of my clients are very high net worth, they're almost all very interesting. One of my more interesting cases involved one of my billionaire clients who wanted to move a very complex business worth hundreds of millions of dollars out of his estate. I was able to pass the business down to the next generation with no gift taxes. What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given? When I was in college and deciding on a career, my parents advised me to pick a career that doesn't have a ceiling. I ultimately decided to go into law, and that turned out to be a great deci- sion. What is the most rewarding part of your job as an attorney? I enjoy helping my clients. The tax code is very complex, but once people understand what can be done for their families it is very gratifying for me to be able to help them protect their assets, not only from the IRS but also from creditors. — Inter viewed by Howard Riell Photo by Christopher DeV argas
