Why did you choose this/these particular areas of practice and when did you know this was what you wanted to do? My uncle, who lived in Chicago, had an accounting fi rm and envisioned that I would eventually join him. After a few winters in Chicago, I soon realized that I wasn't cut out to be a polar bear. Although I received my CPA certifi cate, I returned to the warmer climes of Las Vegas, where I was raised. I got a job at a predecessor fi rm to KPMG, but did not fi nd audit work fulfi lling. I knew then that the best option was to attend law school, this time, in a city with the best climate in the country. Accounting did provide the ability to work during school so that, upon graduation, I was not saddled with stu- dent debt. What are some of the things in this area of the law that have captured your attention? It would seem that as an administrative lawyer, one would be solely involved with mundane issues. However, in addition to exciting mega-projects that shape our town's future and provide jobs for the community, there is the opportunity to help individuals seeking the dream of operating a small business or merely to help a deserving person with a family to obtain a work permit. Recently, there is the prospect of an entirely new era of gaming involving the interactive world that brings with it the phenomenon of social media. Briefl with? The y, what has been the most interesting case you've been involved most interesting cases as a lawyer involved both the Landmark Hotel, where I was COO and General Counsel, and the fi rst Riviera Hotel bankruptcy where I was hired as the president of the hotel the day after their fi ling. I learned from fi rst-hand experience the many positive aspects of a casino bankruptcy as practiced by my future law partner, Gerald Gordon. Of course the most important case was during my time on the Gaming Control Board in the 1970s, the era when the gaming industry was in the grip of organized crime. What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given? " A hundred years from now it won't make a difference, so enjoy your family and be at peace with yourself." What is the most rewarding part of your job as an attorney? The ability to engage with interesting and intelligent people on a daily basis. — Interviewed by Howard Riell Photo by Sam Morris TOP LAWYER AREAS OF PRACTICE PRACTICING Jeffrey Silver Gaming, Administrative Law (liquor licensing, transportation, contractors and other state boards), Planning and Zoning law) 41 years
