IDEAS AND SIX OF THE AREA'S TOP CAMPING SPOTS Hiking at Ferne Clyffe is challenging in many places, but the rock forma- tions and vistas are well worth the trip. Fran Petit photo. By Fran Petit SG Star-Times Staff Writer fpetit@sgstartimes.com Our last camping trip this past Mother's Day weekend was quite the adventure. We wanted to be close to home, so we went to German Ridge, near Cannelton, in the Hoosier National Forest. The campsite provided pub- lic restrooms and non-po- table water, but no electric and no drinking water. How- ever, the place was very se- cluded with large campsites and great hiking trails. We paid $4 a day at a self-ser- vice podium. We chose a site near the restroom. Aside from a cou- ple of horse campers—the area has some great horse trails—we had the place to ourselves. We unloaded, set up camp, built a fire and settled in. I had marinated chick- en kabobs and potatoes so they were ready to grill on the fire pit. And then...in rolled some scary looking storm clouds. Several family members watching the weather and concerned about our safety called and urged us to flee. We headed to the car, but quickly noticed we had a flat tire! A fter Rick put on the spare with thunder and lightning crashing all around, we drove to Rocky Point Marina six miles away and discovered the Rocky Point Grill — a great place with, among other things, awesome barbecue wings. The worst of the storm lasted all of 10 minutes, but it did rain lightly much of the evening. All things considered, we had a great time. But as you consider a camping spot, it pays to know where you could go if the weather turns nasty. I've seen many of the loca- tions in the area — here are my top picks: FERNE CLYFFE PARK Ferne Clyffe, located in Southern Illinois, has mod- ern, primitive, group, back- pack and equestrian camp- grounds. This is my favorite because of the scenic hiking trails. Ferne Clyffe State Park covers 2,430 acres in the Shawnee Hills. Impres- sive rock formations rest along 18 park trails, but two of the best-known sights are Hawks' Cave, a 150 foot shel- ter bluff, and a 100 foot in- termittent waterfall on the Big Rocky Hollow trail. We stay at Deer Ridge camp- ground. The sites are shady and provide gravel pads with electricity, picnic tables and cooking grills. This camp- ground has drinking water, showers and flushing toilets. Turkey Ridge is a walk- in, primitive campground at Ferne Clyffe that includes camp pads, picnic tables, cooking grills and showers. Drinking water and toilets are located near the parking lots. Scouts, church groups and other youth groups will enjoy the Youth Group campground that provides drinking water, picnic ta- bles, cooking grills, toilets and parking. The Backpack camp- ground at Ferne Clyffe is for those who really want a serene camping experience. These wooded sites provide cooking grills, toilets and showers. Sites in the Deer Ridge, Turkey Ridge and Youth Group campgrounds do not require advance res- ervations. Backpackers and horseback riders should make advance arrange- ments through the park of- fice. The German Ridge at Ferne Clyffe includes a prim- itive campground, a 24-mile multiple use trail, and a day Rick gets coffee ready before our hike at Ger- man Ridge. The park has some easy hikes as well as some more difficult trails. Fran Petit photo. See CAMPING on 8
