Jefferson Township Ruritan reschedules activities for Sept. 17 By Andy Heuring The Jefferson Township Ruritan has scheduled a De- molition Derby, fireworks and concessions for Satur- day, September 17. Two days of their three- day July 4 celebration was rained out by strong storms and more than three inch- es of rain, causing their pa- rade and fireworks to be can- celled. The grounds will open at 6 p.m. Saturday, with a demo- lition derby set for 7 p.m., to be followed by fireworks at the end of the evening. Tina Weisman said all of the activities will be in the demolition arena. In other Otwell news, Weisman said the Ruritan will be moving the metal buffalo statue from the el- ementary school to Buchta Trucking's Health Center, which is the former bank branch. Weisman said they will be doing some landscap- ing work before the buffalo is moved. Johnny Cash tribute coming to Prides Creek Prides Creek Park is host- ing a special benefit concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 23 featuring an authentic trib- ute to Johnny Cash and the legends of country music by Gary West. The unique trib- ute is a free concert, with do- nations and a freewill offer- ing going to St. Jude Chil- dren's Research Hospital. Papa John's Pizza and Coke products will be of- fered to the public, accord- ing to Prides Creek Park superintendent Brandon Schultheis, who has orches- trated a number of well at- tended concerts and events located at the park's amphi- theater. Prides Creek Park is just a half mile south of Hwy. 61, Petersburg, off East County Road 400 North. Dr. Eric Harman appointed to Memorial Medical Staff Hospitalist Eric Hartman, M.D. was recently appointed to the Active Medical Staff at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center. A hos- pitalist is a doctor who works exclusively in a hospital fo- cusing on the general med- ical care of hospitalized pa- tients. Dr. Hartman received his medical degree from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine in Little Rock, and completed his residency at St. Francis Family Medi- cine Residency in Indianapo- lis. Most recently, he served as a hospitalist and medical director at St. Francis Hos- pital. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians. ever, he cautioned, Peters- burg might not get any- thing. "We know this is go- ing to be extremely com- petitive because every community in the state is going to apply for this. You can ask for as much as $1 million. We are only ask- ing for $ 86,000, so surely we will get it," said Klipsch. Petersburg has un- til June 30 of next year to complete the work if they get the grant. Davis said if the county gets all they have requested, they "will be paving until the snow flies." But he said they would work the city proj- ects into their schedule. Councilman Gary Leavitt said he didn't think the city had paved any streets since he had been on the council. Councilman John Mel- hiser expressed concern about the large amount of paving proposed. "My big concern is this is too quick and we haven't had a chance to engineer for it. . . We haven't had enough time to look at this. I just don't think we are prepared to throw $175,000 at as- phalt," said Melhiser. Klipsch said Petersburg was on the state's timeline. "I think we should take ad- vantage of this because next year this might not be available," said Klipsch. "This is something we might not ever have a chance for again," said Councilman Fran Lewis. "I move we submit this, this year. I think we have to do it. We can't not get out there and take advantage of is. We haven't done any pav- ing. We can't let our streets go to pot," said Leavitt. His motion was approved by a four to one vote, with Melhiser voting against it. The streets included in the grant applications are: First St. to Illinois St.; Seventh St., north of High- way 61; Walnut St., from First St. to Highway 61; North Fifth St. to the rail- road crossing; Locust St., from Highway 61 to High- way 356; McCoy St., from Highway 61 to Elementary St.; North Fourth St. to rail- road crossing; South Sixth St., from Main St. to Illi- nois St.; Mulberry St., from Highway 57 to Spruce St.; and Whitelock Ave., from Highway 56 to County Road 400 N. Police Chief Chuck Baumgart said the current tactical vest his officers wear have ceramic plates in the front, but don't have any extra protection on the side. He said they are vul- nerable to anything larger than handgun fire. He said steel plates for the sides of their vests cost about $100 for each vest. Petersburg has five officers. Baumgart said he didn't have an exact cost and some shipping costs would be incurred. By a 5 -0 vote, the council approved up to $ 850. Mayor Klipsch told the council the city will have to complete an income survey to apply for sewer and wa- ter grants. He said Region 15 was going to start that process and it would cost about $ 3,750 for the survey. Clerk-treasurer Tammy Selby told the council light- ning wiped out their serv- er last week. She said Rich Coan worked six hours get- ting it fixed. In other storm relat- ed events, Mayor Klipsch said Petersburg's crews spent much of last Wednes- day, during a nearly six- hour power outage, going from sewage lift station to lift station with a gener- ator, keeping the sewage pumped off. He said they had a process of pumping them in sequence to pre- vent sewage from backing up in anyone's basement when the power is off. Davis said the crew worked until about 3 a.m. Thursday morning. The next Petersburg meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, August 1. PAVING Continued from page 1 Dr. Eric Harman
