Poplar Street, Petersburg SIXTY YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday, June 8, 1956 Sgt. Richard L. Wood is spending a 14 day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Wood, in Petersburg. He has just com- pleted eight weeks of basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. and will report to Fort Dix, N.J. on June 8 for eight weeks advanced train- ing. Sgt. Wood is a graduate of Otwell High School and was employed by the Mid- west Telephone Company before entering service. PIKE COUNTY STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM VINCENNES Charles Arnold, son of Mr. and Mrs. Travis Ar- nold; Donald Blair, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Blair, both of Petersburg; Kath- leen Gray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Verner Gray, of Ot- well; and Basil Phillips, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Phil- lips, of Glezen, were mem- bers of the 150th graduating class of Vincennes Universi- ty on Friday evening, June 1. The college is graduating 93 seniors. John Shoultz, of Millers- burg, Pa., is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Royal Benjamin in Pe- tersburg; Mr. and Mrs. Har- old Campbell in Bowman; and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Har- vey in Union. JOHN ALEXANDER GETS BACHELOR DEGREE John Alexander, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Alexan- der, of Cato, was graduated from Oakland City College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music and Eng- lish. He received the annu- al Music Award given to the person or persons demon- strating both the greatest proficiency in music as well as making the most contri- butions to the music depart- ment and the college. Dr. Neva Barnard, head of the music department, present- ed the award. Alexander has accepted a teaching position at Albion, Ill., where he will teach cho- ral music and band. FIFTY-NINE YEARS AGO The Pike County Dispatch Friday, June 14, 1957 Mr. and Mrs. Hollie Sims and Kay and Carolyn Ward left Friday for Florida where they will spend a two week vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Parker and Howard, Jr., of Winslow, were in Louisville Sunday at the Rexall Christ- mas merchandise showing and buy for the Parker Rex- all Store. Mrs. Parker, Mrs. Thelda Jennings, Linda Parker and Lyndall Nelson were there Monday, buying for the store. Mr. and Mrs. Marion De- Tar, of New Oxford, Pa., were guests of his father, Dr. G. B. DeTar from Tues- day until Friday of last week. From here they went to In- dianapolis where they at- tended the wedding of their niece, Anne Turner and Dale E. Waganer. Donald E. Hume, of Ches- terton, formerly of Winslow, Maryville community, was in Terre Haute Sunday at the Indiana State Teachers Col- lege commencement where he received his Master's de- gree. He is assistant super- intendent of the Chesterton schools. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Markham and Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Voyles, of Peters- burg, were in Washington, Monday evening. FIFTY YEARS AGO The Pike County Dispatch Thursday, June 23, 1966 David Copple and his aunt, Mrs. Violet Schmaltz, of Winslow, and her grand- son, Stephen Schmaltz, left Friday for a week's vacation in Key West, Fla. Sp. 4-C and Mrs. Leon Corn, of Fayetteville, N.C. are visiting a few day with their families, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Corn in Stendal and Mrs. Bill Berlin, Bridget and Tad near Winslow. On their return, Bridget will accom- pany them to Fayetteville for a visit. Joe Heilman, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Heilman, and D. R. Minnis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Minnis, re- turned to their homes in Pe- tersburg, Saturday after- noon, after having spent a week in Bloomington as del- egates from Petersburg to Boys' State there last week. DEJARNETT GRADUATES FROM WEST POINT Jason Andrew DeJarnett, son of Dan and Sheila De- Jarnett, of Arthur, graduat- ed from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. on June 1. Following graduation leave at home, Lt. DeJarnett will begin his initial five year commitment to active duty in the U.S. Army on August 17 with a 16 week Infantry Officer Basic Course at Ft. Benning, Ga., followed by Ranger School in January 1991, also based at Ft. Ben- ning, Ga. He is a 1987 graduate of Pike Central High School. NAMED ALL- AMERICAN SCHOLAR Steve Wiscaver has been named a U.S. achievement Academy All-American Scholar. The All-American Scholars must earn a 3.5 or better grade point average. Only scholars selected by a school instructor, counselor or other qualified sponsor are accepted. Wiscaver at- tends Cumberland College. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Wiscaver and grandson of Lola Satterfield, of Peters- burg.
